  2. When is the vocabulary unit test?

  3. The vocab test will not be until after the brief February break...and I will post a new grammar challenge this weekend for next week.

  4. Miss Arney, since I was absent yesterday and today in class, I didn't get the writing seminar packet. But should I attempt the journal due Monday? Or should I wait until I get the packet and do the work that we were assigned before first?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Nanxi: The journal assignment is actually on the agenda page. You might want to speak with a classmate before starting it...or just look for the new thread on this blog.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Oh, Jeremy...to your other question about "What happens in...": Yes. But I'm going to have to disable it so that you guys can dialogue on the journal forum.
Will someone in Period 9 please remind Terence to edit his previous comment. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Don't worry Miss Arney!!!!! I got it covered!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Terence: it's the word "ugly" with the noun it modifies that I am worried about....just call it a venting session, ok? :-)

  9. I have a good quality of a teacher. This teacher was one of my elementary school teachers. She was a tough teacher, but she helped me a lot when it came to school. She was very caring and you could tell that she loved her job. One thing she did to make sure that no one made any mistakes on their h.w was she would make you stay in at recess and correct any mistakes in your hw. I absolutley hated this because I made a lot of errors in my math hw, and would usually end up staying in her classroom while everyone else was outside having fun. I realize now that she taught me not to rush when doing my homework, and to take my time. She is definitley a good epitome of a concientous and caring teacher.

  11. The wordmasters test tomorrow, it does not count right, but you can earn B squares?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Did anyone find the new extra credit assignment? I clicked on the "lazy dog" link but i don't see the it anywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Annette: If you click on the link beneath the dog, it should take you to the extra credit page. Then click on the TKM xc assignment. If you cannot access it, try cutting and pasting the link below:
    http://www.prhs.k12.ny.us/fac/arneyd/English%209Honors/Eng9H%20Extra%20Credit%202009-2010.htm

    ReplyDelete
  14. Thanks Miss Arney! It only worked on internet explorer, on the other browser it only showed the old extra credit assignments.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Miss Arney,
For the extra credit assignment, if you work with a partner, does it have to be someone that is in the same class?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Miss Arney, for the extra vred assignment, it states that you or you and your partner may create up to 2 menus for this quater. Does that mean we can hand them in at the same time?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Also, for the 2 different menus, can they be with different partners or one by yourself and the other with a partner?

    ReplyDelete
  18. is it okay if i use second person in description of the food in the TKMB menu?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wow...so many questions; I'm going from the bottom, up.
    Annette: yes.
Megan: either is fine for both questions
Tracey: No - it can be someone from the other class.
Oh, and I will be changing it so that one menu can be a TKM themed restaurant; the other can be from our other reading material (Odyssey; ATTWN; Mythology; Oedipus)

    ReplyDelete
  20. For the annotating homework, should we do that on looseleaf?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I have the same question as Lauren: Can we do the annotating homework on looseleaf or type it?
I think if I use Post-Its, they will all fall off the paper by the time I am ready to turn it in.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The sub today said that we had to create our own introduction for homework after we finished correcting the introductions sheet. However it's not on the agenda sheet and what is the introduction for (what journal entry)?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Don't go too crazy; highlighting and typing/ writing out the notes would be absolutely fine...or highlight with post it notes.
Victoria: I thought I made it clear on the agenda update - you aren't writing your own intro; that will be done as a group in class on Thursday.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Miss Arney,
On your website it says to "Get your groups ready for the So You Think You Know BOO About Mockingbird? novel scavenger hunt challenge!" I do not remember hearing anything about this.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Jason, Miss Arney mentioned it a while ago that we were going to have a huge scavenger hunt around the school and at each part you have to answer something about TKAM. I think you can be in groups or by yourself but Miss Arney will probably explain more later.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Not exactly, Danielle: I'm sorry if I confused you. You won't have to answer questions in different parts of the building. Your group will be given a test; the answers can be found in the novel. Your group can go "hide" in a corner of the buidling to answer the questions -- but you don't want other groups to eavesdrop on your answers, so you need to be hiding.

    ReplyDelete
  27. For the amazon.com reviews I am having trouble understanding how we are supposed to write notes on that..
I was led to believe that we should just edit the reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ally, I think we have to explain whether or not we agree with the reviews and why, and then describe the tone of the writing.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yes, Ally...you may comment on the mistakes, but you don't need to edit them. Goodness; that would take FOREVER

    ReplyDelete
  30. Miss Arney,
I noticed on the agenda that the Vocab Test as well as the Journal are due Friday 2/19.
However, those of us going on the Model UN trip to Boston leave Friday morning. Should we drop the journal off in the morning?

    ReplyDelete
  31. For the homework tonight should we write paticular quotes from the amazon reviews having to do with content, style, and diction or should we just write down or should we just write down the general review number?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Tracey:
I didn't know about that. Yes; maybe you guys can take the vocab test after school on Thursday (and, yes, drop off the journal before you leave).
Danielle: you can CODE them. Put an A in the margin next to the first quote and then put "A" under the category it fits. Does this make sense?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I am a little confused about the homework for tonight - I understand style and diction but what would fall under the category of content?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Shawna:
The "concrete details" the writer uses to back up his point (like Harper Lee is a male) or how the book is shallow...
    does this make sense?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh okay, now I understand - thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  36. It does make sense now. Thank You Miss Arney!

    ReplyDelete
  37. For the homework, are we supposed to take sentences and put them into the chart or just the entire review?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Eric: Umm...I'm sorry but I don't understand your question. Please read the above posts b/c people have already asked questions about the assignment. If it still doesn't make sense, please write again

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ohhhhhhhhhhh I understand it now nevermind

    ReplyDelete
  40. Are we supposed to write about all of the reviews for our homework?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Lauren, I think that you are supposed to pick 5 for content, 5 for diction and 5 for style. But you don't have to use all of them and I think you can use one for more than one category

    ReplyDelete
  42. Teresa: Thank you! You are absolutely correct.

    ReplyDelete
  43. For the Romeo and Juliet recitations, can we memorize three 10 point passages (total of 30 points)? Or can we memorize one 10 point passage and three 5 points? I'm confused...

    ReplyDelete
  44. For the prepositions homework--
I am really confused, it says on the agenda sheet it says not to circle possessive prepositions, but in class we did this sentence, "Brian, do you have my ticket to the play?" and we circled "my", so in "Carol, will you help me carry our trunk?" would "our" and "me" be the prepositions that we circle? Im so confused!

    ReplyDelete
  45. James - I think you mean pronouns?..... We didn't circle "my"; we underlined the sentence and I put it under the main line. IF a pronoun is used as an adjective it is NOT considered to be a pronoun anymore. So when I put "my" under the word ticket, it was to show it is no longer a pronoun - it is an adjective. Simply put: do not identify possessive pronouns as pronouns because they are now adjectives. Does this make any sense at all?

    ReplyDelete
  46. For the SAT practice homework, can we just circle it in the book?

    ReplyDelete
  47. For the pronouns homework is there going to be any questions with no answers?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yes. Actually, Kevin, there are two.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I was so confused!Thank you Miss Arney!!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Erin, I know you posted this a few days ago but i think you could do 3 10 points or 1 10 point and 3 five points but the most u can earn is 25 points even though the 3 10 point recitations add to thirty.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Is it alright if I include drinks on the menu?

    ReplyDelete
  52. No, Joanna, that is not necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  53. We don't have to read the prolouge of Romeo and Juliet, right. We didn't get it, so should we look it up or something?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I don't think so Terence but Miss Arney would know better than I do.

    ReplyDelete
  55. No; we will begin R&J tomorrow....
thank you for being conscientious enough to ask the question, though.
I just never expected for us to have 2 snow days; I blame Grace. She jinxed me! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  56. For the TKAM menu, if you are working with a partner do you need 3 appetizers, 5 entrees, and 2 desserts, or 5 appetizers, 8 entrees, and 3 desserts? I wasn't sure when the assignment said add to add it to the original or not.

    ReplyDelete
  57. 3 appetizers, 5 entrees, and 2 desserts; the wording is confusing - my apologies, Danielle

    ReplyDelete
  58. For the grammar homework that is due tomorrow can we please go over it in class. I tried numbers 1-10 and didn't understand them.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Miss Arney, since I left my vocabulary sheets at school, is there a link for the list on your website?

    ReplyDelete
  60. In the grammar HW tonight, should we put "to Gale" in the prep. phrase column and "Gale" again in the IO column for the sentence, "Rico gave his paper to Gale."

    ReplyDelete
  61. Joanna, an indirect object mus always come before a direct object (paper) so in that example "to Gale" is a prepositional phrase and "Gale" is not an indirect object.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Nanxi, there is a list for a list of vocab if you scroll down the the English 9 honors front page and here is the link: http://www.prhs.k12.ny.us/fac/arneyd/English%209Honors/English%209%20Honors%20master%20list%20with%20definitions.doc

    ReplyDelete
  63. In the grammar HW from last week Wendnesday, do you have to diagram the questions it's telling you to do on the paper? Also, how do you diagram a question??? Grammar is my weakest point in this class and very troublesome to do, I'm stuck at the diagramming though so any help is really, really, REALLY appreciated. In advance, thank you to anyone who can help!!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I'm going from the bottom up...and I'm sorry I'm home so late from tonight's grammar gang.
Amanda: I told you to ignore the directions on the page and to follow those on the website. You aren't expected to diagram anything.

Annette: Thank you for helping Nanxi and Joanna!

Victoria: Indirect objects and prepositional phrases are something we have covered in class... if you are really confused, can you stay after tomorrow (don't turn in the assignment tomorrow; we can talk about it after school if you are available).

    ReplyDelete
  65. Amanda, if I am thinking of the same grammar homework you are thinking of, Miss Arney told us to disregard the directions and just fill in directly on the sheet the correct objective form.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Sorry Miss Arney I didn't realize you posted a response already!

    ReplyDelete
  67. So there isn't any grammar homework tonight right?

    ReplyDelete
  68. For the grammar homework tonight, I am confused what to use for some of the antecedents. If the sentence is 10. Every woman did (her, their) best to make the program a success. would the antecedent be every, woman, or every woman because every is also singular so I am not sure what to use for the antecedent.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I think its every woman, but I'm not sure.

    ReplyDelete
  70. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Danielle,
I think that "woman" is the antecedent because in this case, "every" functions as an adjective modifying "woman".

    ReplyDelete
  72. Thank you Jeremy! I see what your saying how it tells the amount or number of "woman" so I guess "every" could be an adjective.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Miss Arney, this is kind of random but are we going to have any major assignments like journal due after next weekend? I am going away to Albany for Youth and Government, and I just want to know in advance

    ReplyDelete
  74. Miss Arney, is there any limit on how much information we need for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Megan, I don't think there is a limit but I think the more information you have the more credit you will get.

    ReplyDelete
  76. For the grammar challenge this week is number one supposed to say planed or planted?

    ReplyDelete
  77. Danielle,
I think you are right. Also, I think it is supposed to say "Tim", not "Time".

    ReplyDelete
  78. OK...I will need to check it tomorrow night; I can't get into my computer room tonight...

    ReplyDelete
  79. Thanks Danielle. I know I posted a while ago, but I haven't had the chance to check the blog for a really long time. Thank you so much for clearing that up for me.

    ReplyDelete
  80. For Part 2 of the grammar homework tonight, should we indicate the pronoun and its function in the sentence (e.g. subject, predicate nominative, direct object, indirect object, object of preposition) or follow the directions listed on the sheet?
Also, number 19 on Part 1 reads:
"(They, Them) is solely responsible for making the institution's rules and regulations."
    "They/Them is"?!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Jeremy: for number 19, there was a note up on the white board (that probably got overlooked b/c of the ...um....excitement(?) in class today. Change the "is" to "are"
And I guess for part 2, just follow the directions I typed for it. I typed the assignment up a few weeks ago; I guess I forgot that I had veered away from the directions in the first part. Sorry for the confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Miss, Arney for the quiz tomorrow, do we need to know what happened in the stories or the people in the stories. Because on the sheet you gave us it was just the people.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Aww Jeremy! I was gonna say that. Whatever. Feel Better Miss Arney!

    ReplyDelete
  84. For the grammar Dr. Seuss sheet,
I am confused on how to diagram 'that' and 'them or there'...
I said that was a direct object. And them or there are adverbs, so I put them under the verb?

    Thanks guys!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Tracey, I think 'them' is a pronoun so for a sentence like number 5 them would be a direct object. 'There' is also a pronoun because it is substituting for a place so for a sentence such as 7 I think it would also be a direct object. "That" can either be a pronoun or adejective. For number 3 that is a pronoun but if Sam-I-am had been in thesentence I think itwould have been a adjective. Sorry this is so long but I hope this helps and is correct!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Danielle: You rock! I just got home from LIU so I'm so glad you got to Tracey's question.
Remember that the there and here are ADVERBS.
Everyone: review your notes! the big test is coming! (Then I can be an "it"!)

    ReplyDelete
  87. For the Grammer worksheet, in the question sentences where would the question words like would or do be placed in the diagram?

    ReplyDelete
  88. Kelly, "would" and "do" are helping verbs, so they are part of the verb phrase.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Sentence 7 says, "Would you like them there or there?" Is this a typo, and if it is, should it say "here or there" or "there or here"?

    ReplyDelete
  90. Jeremy, if you look up Green Eggs and it is "here or there" but since it is a typo I think it would be okay whether you put "there or there" or "here or there".

    ReplyDelete
  91. For number two on the Green Eggs and Ham sheet, what would Sam be because I is the subject and am is the verb so is Sam a direct object or an adjective describing I?

    ReplyDelete
  92. For tonights grammar assignment i am confused about the prepositional phrases.
For example in sentence 13 it says "I do not like them with a mouse" so for the diagram would you put "with a mouse" under the verb (would eat) or under the direct object (them) ???

    ReplyDelete
  93. Danielle, I believe Sam is a direct object.
Tara, I believe it goes under the verb.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Wait, no, Danielle, I think that Sam is the predicate nominative because it is saying that I am Sam.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Sorry I didn't mean direct object sorry to mix it up Tracey. Thank you Tracey and Terence!

    ReplyDelete
  96. hey guys, for tonights grammer assignment it became very clear that there and here are adverbs which I now understand their placemnt underneath a verb when diagraming yet, they are connected by or which in many of our other diagrams we would make a rocket ship and i have looked into the yellow packet as reference for adverbs like here and there, yet none of the examples of information supports a statment using "here or there" in the same question. So my question is how to diagram "here or there" underneath the verb.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I'll try to see if I can explain this. You have to diagram "here" and "there" as if they were separate adverbs under the verb and then connect them with a dotted line and write "or" on the line.

    ________
    \------\

    ReplyDelete
  98. Use this link; the example is #28.
    http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/diagrams2/one_pager1.htm

    ReplyDelete
  99. Jeremy: that is a great diagram and a great site.
Billy: remember, there won't be an example in the chapter 19 packet with "here and there" but double adverbs should be there...no?

    ReplyDelete
  100. I don't think there are any double adverbs in the packet.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Thank you for the comment before Miss Arney I didn't know what you were talking about when you told me after school today that's why i was confused!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Guys: I'm SO sorry; I really thought it showed how to do the compound modifiers in the packet.
    Danielle: ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  103. what scenes do we have to read over the weekend? 3 and 4?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Yes, 3 & 4. There will NOT be a quiz; we will review them, but I need you guys to read and process them as best you can this weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  105. For the grammar HW this weekend, do we need to do all of that labeling and noting what part of speech it is or are we just filling in the correct pronouns?

    ReplyDelete
  106. You just have to fill in the correct pronouns.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Miss Arney will there be a grammar challenge posted this week?

    ReplyDelete
  108. Amanda, Miss Arney said we are not having one this week but we might have one over spring break or the week we get back.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Miss Arney,
I was reading through the Act I notes, and I am confused with the one regarding Benvolio. You said that Benvolio has a prophecy of his death, and that this death will occur soon afterwards.
I am unable to connect this with an event in the scene? When did this happen?

    Thanks, Tracey Ryan

    ReplyDelete
  110. I didn't see anything relating to a prophecy about Benvolio's death either. Is this a mistake, or are Tracey and I both missing something?

    ReplyDelete
  111. I don't think Benvolio dies in Romeo and Juliet so maybe the question meant how did Benvolio prophesize Romeo's death or how did Romeo prophesize his own death? Maybe it was a typo but I am confused too.

    ReplyDelete
  112. For Princeton Persuit, are we able to use allusions from Romeo and Juliet, or only from mythology?

    ReplyDelete
  113. Killeen, I think we are allowed to have allusions from anything we have done this year.
Also, I was just wondering the day we get back to school, will there be extra help?

    ReplyDelete
  114. thanks lauren!
and im not sure about extra help but i know Miss Arney said that she will be posting practice grammar quizzes online so those should help alot for the test

    ReplyDelete
  115. The online quizzes are posted at the class website; an update of the specific sections of the test will be up within the next 24 hours.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Miss Arney, I was looking at some of the grammar review sites, and I saw some things on them that we did not go over, like "count nouns" and "mass nouns". Please tell me that these will not be on the test.

    ReplyDelete
  117. No, of course not. Some of the test questions have been lifted directly from old exercises/ homework activities. There will be nothing "new" on the test.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Just tryed to check the class website and it said "page could not be found", I don't think it is just my computer so I am just putting it out there.

    ReplyDelete
  119. The same thing happened to me too Kelly, but I got the link from someone.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Kelly, here is the link. I gave it to Lauren and it worked directly so maybe the hyperlink on the other page isn't working.

    http://www.prhs.k12.ny.us/fac/arneyd/English%209Honors/HOME%20PAGE%20english9honors.htm

    ReplyDelete
  121. For the question sentences what part of speech would words like how or when be considered?

    ReplyDelete
  122. Questions that answer when, where, and how (setting questions) are all modifiers. I'm making this a multiple choice:
    a) adjective
    b) adverb
Check your notes and be prepared to answer that tomorrow, Kelly ;-) I know that I'm being a little evil

    ReplyDelete
  123. Miss Arney,
on one of the homeworks when filling in pronouns, one of the sentences was supposed to end in you and your friend. I put you first, and your friend last, because I thought you always goes first. But it was marked wrong. Is this a mistake or am I doing something wrong? Thanks

Also, if there is 'us' you' and 'me', what would the order be?

    ReplyDelete
  124. I was wondering if it is okay that we hand in the word masters cards tomorrow or after wednesday because we have not been able to?

    And feel better Miss Arney!

    ReplyDelete
  125. Thursday is fine if you aren't coming back to take the WM test...
    and thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  126. Miss Arney,

Someone said that the journal is now due on Friday. Is that true?

    ReplyDelete
  127. Marissa,
Yes, that was written on the other blog for Quarter 4, I believe this one is closed.

    ReplyDelete
