No Holds Barred: YOU get to evaluate the class!

As you well know, I value your opinion.  Each year I try to reflect on what I can do better as your teacher and how the course can better meet your needs. I ENTREAT you to please offer me some of your feelings now.  I respect your candor; don't be afraid to put your name to this (up until this Friday, you will still earn B-squares).  This will ABSOLUTELY not impact on your grade or my love for you.  However, if you are too frightened to tell the truth, you may sign in with an anonymous name (just make up a fake gmail account).  I want the truth, but please remain respectful.  No bad language or insults or I will be forced to shut down the thread entirely.
You may share what worked for you (the website, the blog, the mailbox system, the participation points, favorite books, favorite note system, vocab, grammar or literary games; etc) or what didn't work for you.
For instance, Period 9 never finished the heated debate on whether or not extra credit should be granted to everyone who wants it.  Evaluate the final exam...other unit tests.... everything!  Do you feel you had enough time to complete your assignments?  I am also looking for suggestions on how to make things better.  What do other teachers do that I do not that you wish I did?
I, myself, already know that my attendance and turnover time for graded papers was lacking this year.  I will acknowledge, though, that tests were not returned because I don't think we had ONE unit test for which everyone in the class was healthy.  I hope we ALL have better health next year.
I would rather you be honest here (and earn points) than vent on ratemyteachers; if you share your feelings here, I will see them and possibly be able to make myself a better teacher.

  1. I personally thought you were extremely helpful. You always offered extra help and gave out so much extra credit so we could raise our grade. Also I really liked the fact that if we had a huge exam on the same day as one of your tests, you would change the date. The only part I really didn't like about the class was grammar. Besides that I actually enjoyed ELA this year. Also, today I thought the final was fair, it wasn't too hard or too easy and I was surprised that I actually had enough time to finish.

  2. The final was fair, and it was very helpful that you gave us some extra time.

I think that this course was extremely helpful and there is not much that could have been done differently and made it better.

You take into account that we also have other classes and it was unbelievably helpful that you made sure we were not too stressed and not taking too many tests in one day.

The participation points were helpful too. The blog is very good for people like me who are more quiet during class.

***I had trouble keeping up with some of the reading during the second semester, but I know that it is a tight schedule and there are many books we need to study during the year, so there is not much you can do about that. And it was probably just me.* And either way, I did catch up soon enough. Thank you for understanding.***

Overall, this class was very entertaining. Please continue to scream during class! Haha.

I appreciate that you are very fair about everything and if I got a bad grade I deserved it. This is one of the few classes where I can honestly say we truly earn our grade. You didn't favor people and gave everyone an equal chance to do well.

  3. I think overall the course was alright. The only problem that I kind of had was that some lessons were really rushed due to the amount of questions asked. If there was a designated time for questions, I think we would have been less rushed.

I know not everyone likes to present but I love showing my work to others. Maybe 1 project in which you present it to the class.

Also, I think the classes should have more socratic seminars. Debating over topics is great and really gives students a further understanding of the novel/s.

  5. I agree that the final was absolutly fair and covered the main concepts of what we learned this year and also enjoyed that you would allow us to ask questions and you understood that you as a teacher needed to explain things and not simply give notes. That helped a lot. Also, I feel that the extra credit oppertunities were very helpful.
This class made me like English class again, not only because the majority of the books were actually good this year but because you were able to make some of the activities and lessons fun and entertaining, so be sure to continue that. Have a good summer!!!!!

  6. I agree too that the final was fair. The end of the year was a little bit rushed but i learned so much about all the books we read. I would have never picked up an any symbols in any book but now i cant not notice them. I am so much better at grammar than i was comming into this year and i feel like we learned a lot of valuble things. All of the extra credit was so helpful and participation points were such a huge gift. English is my favorite class and this year was one of the best. Thanks so much for all that you taught us and have a great summer.

  7. I found English to be a desired class for the first time in my life. I absolutely LOVED this year, the only drawbacks being some unfavored reading material.

Grammar: still a touchy subject yet thanks to your helpful extra helps and references to the yellow book/packets I was able to comprehend more than I ever did before. Thank you.

Books: I thought I was going to HATE TKM but I found it an interesting read that wasn't a cookie-cutter copy (alliteration much?) of classic southern tales. I also loved mythology, Oedipus, R&J, and LOF. They were all very intriguing and I wish we had more time to read Frankstein.

Classwork: was so helpful, funny, and efficient. I never would have been able to make it through the school year without laughter in that class. I will greatly miss Ray's random comments and all the other great moments in class.

Extra Credit: possibly one of the greatest things I will miss is the B-squares and bonus points. They really were a major factor in me passing the 3rd quarter as well as helping me throughtout the year. I wish we were (alliteration AGAIN?!) to fully use them next year.

Overall, I will ultimately miss the Furies (surprisingly), the scary voice before a game or pop quiz, and the utter craziness throughout the day. This year's English class was one of the greatest so far and I will truly miss it!!!

  8. In other words: keep doing what you're doing since it really helped. The only drawback was the rushed time but that couldn't be helped since you were sick. I hope that next year you will keep all the craziness in the class (I want to be able to hear the Furies from next door haha) On the final: it was fair, we never worked on a Critical Lens before so it was a MAJOR drawback in the end. Maybe more practice with them for next year's class? But ultimately it was fair and so were the grades throughtout the year.

  9. This year I learned so much about literature and looking deeper into things. Most importantly, I learned how to manage my time for various assignments, so that it would benefit me in the end. I am still a little shaky on grammar and I wish we didn't have to rush towards the end of the year. Also, i feel there was a lot of time wasted by questions or comments being said by the same people over and over again, and some people didn't get the chance. It was a good year though and I learned a lot that will help me through high school.
    Have a good summer!

  10. Overall, I think this year will be helpful to all of us in the future. I feel that writing essays has become easier and I have a better understanding of grammar. Some grammar is still confusing but overall I think I get basic grammar more easily. I think if we worked on grammar more, it would be helpful. I thought there was alot of work in this class, but so many opportunities to raise your grade. Honestly, I believe that extra credit boosted my grade so much. Thanks for everything and have a nice summer!
