The vast majority of you have extremely strong feelings about this pair of star-crossed lovebirds (swan, dove, crow, whatever!)...
Use this forum to ask questions, offer insights, or just share your favorite line from the play (of course, this line may be your favorite to mock!).
You should also comment on the characters' behaviors and actions (not just the title characters...all of them).

Romeo and Juliet are definetly love sick and crazy. They met each other for ten minutes and they are already getting married and making out. Romeo is probably only doing this because Juliet is his "rebound" girl from Rosaline and she was hot. Juliet is only in this because she has never loved anyone before and doesn't know exactly what love is like. So the two of them are just probably desparate kids.
ReplyDeleteAnd after reading act II scene i Mercutio is definetly going to be an interesting character with interesting conversations to listen too and discuss.
I agree with Danielle, Romeo and Juliet take things way to fast and after barely knowing each other they are going off to get married. Romeo is the kind of guy that can't hold onto a relationship and can never make up his mind. Juliet is just deeply in love and thinks Romeo is the only one for her.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Danielle too, Romeo meets the most beautiful girl, Juliet, and does not give a single thought about Rosaline after. He then falls instantly in love with a girl he has just met. Romeo is obviously a player and goes for the hottest girl of them all. Later that night Romeo goes to Juliet’s balcony, and they exchange vows of love! They haven't even known each other for one day and they decide to get married. They shouldn't act on marriage as fast as they did.
ReplyDeleteIf the play is supposed to take place in Italy, why do all the actors speak with British accents?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lauren, Danielle, and Megan too. I thought Romeo and Juliet would be romantic but they fall in love so fast. Romeo "loves" Rosaline one minute and Juliet the next. At that rate if they were alive just a couple more days who knows if he would have found someone new to replace Juliet. Romeo is supposed to be romantic and he is kind of creepy. Watching her on the balcony....wanting to be a glove on her hand so he can touch her cheek. They are also really young. I know the times was different but Juliet thought she was too young to marry Paris but the second she sees Romeo she wants to get married. And last but not least, both of them are superficial. They havent spoken to eacother and they are already in love. Romeo says nothing abour her at all, just her looks, how hot she is, and how no other girl is as pretty as she.
ReplyDeleteI think Shakespeare's concept of Romeo is showing us the way people in the present also act. Many people pay attention to the outside appearances and judge others depending on looks, just like Romeo does towards Rosaline and Juliet.
ReplyDeleteCelebrities often become famous quickly but also become forgotten quickly when fans find someone new to obsess over. Romeo is the perfect archetype for fans nowadays.
It seems like Romeo tends to gravitate towards the things he can't have. He first went after Rosaline even though she became a nun so obviously he could not be with her because she is staying chaste. Besides the fact he originally went after Juliet because of her beautiful looks, even after he finds out who she is he keeps pursuing her. Even though Romeo and Juliet are star crossed he could have had the will power to walk away but was such a stalker that he couldn't. This relates to what Nanxi was saying how some of the parts in Romeo and Juliet connect to today because it is like Romeo wants something he know he can't have and people today always want the thing they can't have.Whether it is a person, or a grade, or an object it is almost like a part of human nature. So besides the fact he likes Rosaline and Juliet for their good looks maybe it feels like a challenge for him that he can't have them. Or maybe it is just an instinct for him to move in their direction. And even when he does have Juliet and does marry her, Fate steps in and says no way you two can't be together because you are not supposed to get the thing you want but can not have. So ultimately the way to get rid of Romeo getting his unaccesible love or even for Juliet to get her unaccesible love is to kill them both.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone who has posted so far.
ReplyDeleteRomeo is a creep who bases his feelings for people on looks. He is way to quick to fall into and out of love. He is naive but thinks he's smooth. Juliet thinks he's her one and only love, too.
Mercutio is a character who makes the play a lot more interesting, in my opinion. I think Mercutio adds some humor to the play, even though most of what he says is sarcastic and his views of women are very derogatory. He has no respect for others and little respect for himself.
Benvolio and Friar Lawrence are somewhat similar. Both are very level-headed and add some much-needed stability to Romeo's life. Benvolio only wants the best for Romeo (as his name implies: ben=good, voglio in Italian=I want, so put together it is basically "good wish" or "good intention). Friar Lawrence is very wise.
I think one of the reasons Juliet had to die, besides being part of the star crossed lovers couple, was because in a way she cheated death. In mythology, whenever a character cheated death, such as Sisyphus did, he or she had to die anyway. When Juliet took the tonic the Friar gave her, it was a prevention or another option as opposed to dying. It was like a fake death. This wasn't intentional but it seemed in a way like she was mocking Death by becoming cold and having no pulse but not having to die while doing this. So because she faked and cheated death was a contributing to why she had to die in a way possibly.
ReplyDeleteI love this play i think it is hysterical. My favorite line is defiantly "she doth teach the torches to burn bright" because it's such an old english twist on the now modern "hot"
ReplyDeleteI think everyone's idea about Romeo is pretty much the same, that he is superficial and creepy. But i think Paris is insanely creepy and possessive. He basically tells Juliet before they are married that he owns her face. i could see their marriage ending up on an episode of 48 Hours Mystery, he just seems like a "wife-beater" for lack of a better description! While Romeo maybe a little creepy and superficial, he is much kinder to Juliet and cares for her deeply.
ReplyDeleteI love Harry Potter I don't know about anyone else but whenever someone mentions Juliet's birthday July 31 I think of Harry Potter because Harry's birthday is July 31 too. So maybe this will help someone remember her birthday but I just wanted to share it.
ReplyDeleteWhile planning my essay, I have a strong opinion now about Romeo and Juliet's actions. I honestly don't think that fate can be the scapegoat for Romeo and Juliet's rash actions, and their lack of communication. They could've ended the feud after they got married! If they had told their parents gently that they had married one another, i think there is a chance that the two families could have ended their feuding for Romeo and Juliet's sake! Either that or they wouldn't be allowed together again, but even that is a better outcome than death!!! If they had told their parents they were in love right after the wedding, then they could have had a much smoother relationship! Juliet wouldn't have had to play dead, and Tybalt wouldn't have picked a fight with Romeo if he knew that they were related for the past two days! Romeo needed to communicate!! They brought upon their death.
ReplyDeleteHaha, that would be on a "48 Hour Mystery"! That's really funny. Paris is very creepy. Even though he has a tender side to him, I think that he is too possessive.
ReplyDeleteI thought that Romeo and Juliet would be very different from the way they actually are. We mocked them so much, but it was so funny. This play definitely isn't all it's cracked up to be, in terms of Romeo and Juliet's "true love" for each other. They are both very shallow people!
I thought it was funny when we listened to the tape at the part where Romeo is "BANISH-ED".
