My goodness, you guys are verbose! In order to make everyone's life easier, let's do a second Random Musings for the quarter so you will not need to scroll through over 200 posts!
In the study guide for the allusions are we just supposed to write the line that its in or explain the allusion? Also with the motif and theme boxes should we give specific quotes or just explain when they appear in the chapter?
OK 1 hour and almost 10 comments. Insane, people :-) Annette: find the PAGE it is on and then explain the allusion. You can use the website that is linked from my site. Use the boxes to post-it your book - look for references to those concepts. BTW, the agenda is up and I have some things to help you with the essay on the top of the agenda page. Let me know if you think they are helpful.
Shawna- I think that word masters are due Monday, when the test thing is, but I'm not 100% sure. The links are really helpful- I hope that my essay turns out that good!!!!!!
Miss Arney, I am only a few... several minutes away from finshing typing up my essay. i was just wondering how are we supposed to ICE the qoutes. i have it "Like this." (Sophocles #)
i was just wondering if that wondering is this was how it's done. also, we have to do novel notes for Oedipus? i thought we just had to take notes on post-it notes? (Is that the novel notes?) please help! :3
The novel notes are the three big index cards with information from the novel on them, like the ones we did for and then there were none this summer. they are not the post-its. Miss arney put information about them under this weeks agenda
Miss arney, [or classmates] in the first body paragraph, should the quote be at the beginning? should it relate to all illusions? should all five illusions be included in the paragraph?
Taylor: yes, you can do it in a group. the requirements are on the website. Theresa: the agenda will be up soon. I wanted to get a grip on the week re: when I would be able to get back to school so I plan to have it up tonight. Right now, focus on the word masters for tomorrow and novel notes.
Lauren, I don't believe you had to hand in a physical copy. I did just in case Miss Arney did not get it but my email account was spazzing out too so it is not necessary I don't think but you can if you want to.
Lauren, actually I just looked at the Oedipus blog and it said to hand it in and put plus five on top Sorry what I wrote before!
Miss Arney, is it ok I did not write plus five on the top of the paper I handed in because I did not look at the Oedipus blog before I handed it in? Should I hand it in again tomorrow with plus five?
Miss. Arney, my computer wouldn't print it and, then at school I tried sending it to myself, but it didn't work, is it ok if I sent it to you and find a way to print it tonight? (I did send it it on Saturday).
I'm slightly confused with how we should be filling out the boxes in the TKAM study guide; I feel like I'm falling behind because of it, but i still understand the novel. Will we have to hand in the study guides on a later date for a grade?
No, Ally; you won't be evaluated that way. I know you guys are confused and I apologize that I haven't been there to help guide you. I'll make certain you guys are in a better place soon.
Miss Arney, I handed my vocabulary sentences in early yesterday, but looking back I think I forgot to put a +5 on the top. Is it okay if I take it back tomorrow from Miss Iorio to put the +5 on?
I was wondering if anybody has my TKAM book because I was using it in class and at the end of class i went to put my books away and it was not there. so maybe someone accidentally grabbed it? Thanks
Jason, after school, Tara had to get her binder and there was a book right next to it, i don't know whose it was but you might want to check, it was on top of where the work for all the teams it kept.
Miss Arney or any one else, If we are using a portion of a quote should we use ...? Also if a quote goes from one page to another do you write both pages or the first one?
I have a few questions regarding the first card for novel notes.
1. Year Published - What year should we say the book was published in since it is a play from so long ago? 2. Author's nationality - should we look up background information on Sophocles or simply write something like "Greek"? 3. Symbols/Allsuions/Themes - How many of each should there be?
Annette: that is something we will probably have to discuss Jason: I need your name to be highlighted or clearly incidated on your cards; however, I need to know the names of your groupmates as well. And, it's both. Tara & Marissa: the text should have the approximate year the play was written. That is what should be indicated as the date of "publication" - not the copyright. He is Greek and there should be as many as you can find.
Missy, I guess I am answering my question too, I think I am going to use references to the different gods, references to Cadmus, references to the Sphinx, and I will post any other references I find. I am going to put two quotes or examples for each because it would be crazy to write all fifty for each god! I hope this helps and I hope I am doing the right thing too!
Mythological references are allusions to us. The references to the gods are allusions. and you should explain the significance of the god/dess BRIEFLY.
Should the grabber in the introduction relate to the themes in the story we are using, things that are not named such as the titles not named, or how they both are connected? I am not sure what to focus on for it!
Billy: The test this Friday is up through ch 11, but you need to reread the remainder of the book. We will continue to focus on the first part of the novel this week; however, I don't think it's possible to fully reread the book over next weekend...so start now! Annette: historical fiction or bildingsroman
For number 3 on the Holiday Grammar Challenge (The horse knows the way through the white and drifted snow.), is "drifted" a participle?
Also, I'm not sure if you can answer this one, but for number 1 (Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house we go.), does "to Grandmother's house" modify "go" or "Over the river and through the woods"?
For number 5, did you mean Dr. Spock?
I posted this here as well as in the Grammar Thread because I'm not sure if the Grammar Thread is closed. Miss Iorio posted "Tally ends" there; does this mean that this was her last comment or that the Grammar Thread is closed?
Tally closed means we stopped participation points at this point and I need to calculate from that point forward. It is a code to us, not for you to worry about. Drifted is a participle which means it is an adjective. I can't answer the question for #1 And, yes, I guess I typed a typo for Spock.
Lauren, the A stands for annotate. It means to summerize the story in one sentance. The example Miss Arney gave us was it was like the movie announcer voice.
Now that I have looked at the journal assignment for the first time, I have a few questions:
For starters, what should the grabber be? The example of a thesis statement that I received (Beliefs based on fear rather than facts often lead to prejudice.) sounds more like a general grabber than a specific thesis statement.
Also, am I correct when I say these things?
- The thesis statement is the lesson, which is a combination of the two themes. - A topic sentence gives the made-up title for one chapter. - The two concrete details in each paragraph give two reasons why the title is a good one. - The commentaries tell how the title pertains to the lesson. If so, aren't the commentaries explaining the topic sentence and not the concrete detail they follow?
Jeremy, the grabber should talk about a general statement having to do with either themes or things that are not named. The example given to you would be incorporated in your thesis to show how it relates to TKAM. I believe all of the statements you wrote above are true although your thematic statement only needs one concept you can use more such as two.
I am confused about the thesis statement. I came up with my thematic statement using the list and i am wondering if that is all we need for our thesis or should we say something like "Throughout the novel To Kill A Mockingbird a common theme is......(Insert thematic statement here)?????
Tara, that is kind of what I did for it. I said In To Kill a Mockingbird Jem and Scout learn then thematic statement. So I just elaborated a little to make it fit in to the introduction a little better. Maybe either could work though but I am not 100% sure sorry!
I am confused by the journal, are the two direct quotes being used as our concrete details or commentaries? Since we have one quote per paragraph, where do we place it?
I understand that the study guide does not have to be filled in completely and it is supposed to help us along the way. But I was wondering if we will be handing it in to Miss Arney to look at?
Also, the test on Friday is for Chapters 1-11. Does that mean that we should only have chapters 1-11 filled in for the study guide?
Sorry for the delay in getting back to the blog. I'm going to address these questions from the bottom up. NOTE: some of you are asking questions that are already answered on the blog. Please take a moment to scroll down the most recent comments so that we don't have to repeat information already provided.
Marissa: I'm not collecting the study guide. You should be rereading the entire book over the break (we will start discussing it a week from Monday) so continue to answer questions / allusions. The test only focuses on chapters 1-11.
Tracey: RE: journal. Each body paragraph needs at least ONE direct quote. It should be one of your CDs. If you wish to use more than one in each body paragraph, that is fine. RE: grammar. I don't understand your question. You need to label the underlined word with the proper POS.
Thesis statement: you should identify that Harper Lee expresses the theme of....
Danielle: you are amazing. Thank you for helping out your classmates when I couldn't access my computer.
Jeremy: the commentaries should not only explain the CD but should LINK it to the TS. That's kind of the point of commentaries (they provide the "so what": HOW and WHY is this concrete detail significant? HOW and WHY does this particular CD support the TS?
What is the format for writing the "TITLES" for each chapter?
I would really appreciate if I can get this question answered by Ms. Arney or by anyone. I finished writing it and I'm about to type it but I need to know so I get it right.
Danielle, I know quotes are concrete details, so I think your commentary should be explaining the quote and how it relates to the theme. I'm not sure if you can use another quote for commentary. However, Miss Arney said if you need to you can use another quote as your second concrete detail.
Also i have a question about the conclusion sentence, is there anything specific we are supposed to mention? should it summarize the whole paragraph or just the themes or chapter titles we chose?
I wish you had it in your notes from the essay... G: Grabber E: Elaborate/ explain grabber L: LINK to literature (This can be seen in Harper Lee's novel...) A: Annotate (movie announcer voice) T: Thesis (and TAG if you haven't done so already) INtroduction
And no one has chapter titles - Harper Lee only used numbers; YOU are creating them. That's the point of the journal.
During the discussion in class today, we talked about Jem and Scout recieving a pocket watch from Boo. A chain with a knife was also attached to the pocketwatch. What is the symbolicness of the knife?
Megan, In class we discussed how the knife was more foreshadowing that Boo would be the guardian and savior of Jem and Scout. This is because when Boo goes to save Jem and Scout, he grabs a kitchen knife. That is the connection between the two.
Thank you Miss Arney! Sorry this is a delayed thank you!
Megan, I agree with Tracey about the knife's symbol. I think it being attached to the pocket watch also represented Boo's time and life killed since he has been stuck inside his whole life.So the knife "cuts it off".
Jess Mayernik brought up another point today regarding the pocket watch/knife and it's symbolical meaning. In addition to the two mentioned above, the pocket watch symbolizes time and the knife symbolizes Ewell's knife. If the time (pocket watch) had run out and Boo did not get to the scene fast enough, then Jem and Scout would have been killed (knife).
Kelly: any day up through next Friday. Lauren: Thank you for letting me know! The TKM test will be next Thursday (I'm sorry - that will be the only day to do it)...
EVERYONE: there is a new grammar challenge on the website and a brief update on the agenda page.
I know we are not supposed to talk about the grammar challenge but in number three of this week's is carbon monoxide a compound noun? I do not know if this can be answered because it is a grammar challenge.
Mrs. Arney, I am not sure if you would rather have the TKM test Friday or Thursday but Ms. Caul cancelled our AP test for Friday. In case it would be better to have the test on Friday
OMG, thank you, Marissa. You guys are great when I slack off! Teresa: Actually, I would LOVE to do the test on Friday, but I kind of worked everything out to make certain we have enough time to discuss the midterm essay. TY for letting me know
Miss Arney on page 132 it says "As if that were not enough, the state legislature was called into emergency session and Attics left us for two weeks. The Governor was eager to scrape a few barnacles of the ship of state: therewere sitdown strikes in Birmingham; bread lines in the cities grew longer, people in the country grew poorer"
What does this part mean? Was there some sort of legal dispute in Birmingham causing Atticus to attend to it?
Is this passage only given to show setting or is it something more maybe saying that Atticus does other things other than being Tom Robinson's lawyer?
I was just wondering as I didn't understand what it was trying to say.
From my understanding, Atticus's position is actually a government position (it is an elected post). In the midst of the Great Depression, the Governor is trying to elminate unnecessary positions. The rest of the quote reminds you of that fact (Great Depression); so, yes, it is to establish setting.
Also what about that whole section after Miss Alexandra comes back, where Scout takes about the Sinkfield's. I don't understand what she is talking about. For me the passage is on pg 148.
Miss Arney, For the Preposition Challenge, are we allowed to write down the words on a piece of paper in front of you, or is it mandatory to recite them out loud? (I'm more of a visual person haha)
I understand that the review sheet given to us for the midterm is to be studied not only on the definitions and what they mean, but to also go into a greater depth and find examples, how they are used, and things like that.
However, I was wondering if this was just a guide and that there is more to the midterm than just the Literary Terms listed and Mythology and Figurative Essays? For example, is Oedipus and the Odysessy on it?
So pretty much, is the midterm on strictly what is listed on the review sheet?
Marissa, I wasn't joking when I said the midterm was an insult to your intelligence. I didn't get a chance to go into great detail today because of the 80 question vocab test but PLEASE ask me about the midterm tomorrow (in case I forget like I do when I get excited about discussing symbolism) and I will be more explicit.
For the persuasive essay on the midterm in the outline of the introduction it says we have to "transition to topic/ link to literature and annotate story" this would be applied to the TKAM novel, right?
The information does help thank you so much Miss Arney! I just have a question about the pro paragraphs that I am confused on. I am proving Atticus is not a hypocrite so would the topics i choose why he is a hypocrite in paragraph two be justified in the next two paragraphs or can they be any reason you are justifying why he is not a hypocrite? Like if one of my CDs in paragraph two had to do with him being a bad lawyer should paragraph three or four justify how he is a good lawyer? Sorry if this is confusing!
Danielle: You do not need to refute the specific points made in paragraph 2 in your pro paragraphs. Just find two general arguments that are the most persuasive. As for the novel, I'd rather you simply paraphrase as close as you can and not worry about the citation. Does THIS make sense? :-)
For the essay we are writing on the midterm I am saying that Atticus is a hypocrite. So for my two arguments i am saying that he is racist because he knows that going into the trial he has no chance at winning. For my second argument I am gonig to say that he is sexist because he discriminates against women like how he talked about if Miss. Maudie was in the jury and how that would be funny. However for sexist can another example be when he has Aunt Alexandrea come and stay with the children because he thinks its time for Scout to become more of a lady?
I'm not so sure if that made sense I am more and more doubting myself everytime I think about this essay.
I read Danielles post but I still have a questions. I am proving that Atticus is a hero but I am having trouble finding concrete proof in the article becuase when I read it over a couple of times I just saw his refutes to Freedmans proposal. So can we find reasons that he is not not a hero? I don't know if this makes sense, I am a little confused.
Erika, I think if I am interperting your question right you could probably say a reason why Freedman thinks he is a hypocrite and then refute it using some of your own reasoning. I was having trouble too because I felt I could make up better arguments than some of Barge's. Also, I am confused on what we should base our thesis statement on, Should we base it on our pro side, con side, both, or something else?
Greetings, Scholars of the Class of 2013. I look forward to reading and responding to your posts on this site. Please note that the "gadgets" on the right-side column of the blog home page are not ads. These are games and resources to help you in class. Sharpen your grammar skills, learn a new SAT vocabulary word, or research some characters in mythology!
Wait, where is the agenda???
ReplyDeleteomg!!!! I had the first post!!!!! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahaa
ReplyDeleteFor the To Kill a Mockingbird study guide are we supposed to fill out the boxes?
ReplyDeleteyeah you are kelly.
ReplyDeletethey are the themes
ReplyDeleteand CLAPS FOR TERENCE
Okay thank you Paige. Good job Terence!
ReplyDeleteIn the study guide for the allusions are we just supposed to write the line that its in or explain the allusion? Also with the motif and theme boxes should we give specific quotes or just explain when they appear in the chapter?
ReplyDeleteOK 1 hour and almost 10 comments. Insane, people :-)
ReplyDeleteAnnette: find the PAGE it is on and then explain the allusion. You can use the website that is linked from my site.
Use the boxes to post-it your book - look for references to those concepts.
BTW, the agenda is up and I have some things to help you with the essay on the top of the agenda page. Let me know if you think they are helpful.
The links on the agenda sheet are so helpful, thank you!
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
ReplyDeleteFor our Oedipus novel notes, what do we have to do?
ReplyDeleteThe links are so helpful, thank-you!!!
ReplyDeleteI think we just have to follow the format of the ones we made during the summer, she will probably go over it in class.
ReplyDeleteHi, Scholars.
ReplyDeleteI have just posted help for the novel notes on the agenda page - it is underneath the agenda chart for this week.
The links are very helpful, thank you Miss Arney!
ReplyDeleteI have a quick question - when are the flashcards for WordMasters due?
Shawna- I think that word masters are due Monday, when the test thing is, but I'm not 100% sure. The links are really helpful- I hope that my essay turns out that good!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOkay, thank you Terence!
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney, I am only a few... several minutes away from finshing typing up my essay. i was just wondering how are we supposed to ICE the qoutes. i have it "Like this." (Sophocles #)

The novel notes are the three big index cards with information from the novel on them, like the ones we did for and then there were none this summer. they are not the post-its. Miss arney put information about them under this weeks agenda
ReplyDeleteTHANX!!!! Finished the essay now on to novel noets!!!

ReplyDeleteMiss arney, [or classmates]
ReplyDeletein the first body paragraph, should the quote be at the beginning? should it relate to all illusions? should all five illusions be included in the paragraph?
How many questions/boxes/pages should we have done in our yellow mockingbird packets around this time?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletewhat is this weeks agenda?
ReplyDeleteTaylor: yes, you can do it in a group. the requirements are on the website.
ReplyDeleteTheresa: the agenda will be up soon. I wanted to get a grip on the week re: when I would be able to get back to school so I plan to have it up tonight. Right now, focus on the word masters for tomorrow and novel notes.
Miss. Arney, when is the due date for novel notes, I know you changed it to the 21 but is it still remaining?
ReplyDeleteYes...novel notes are due on Monday.
ReplyDeleteOk, thanks so much. Also if I sent you the essay on Saturday, did I have to hand it in?
ReplyDeleteLauren, I don't believe you had to hand in a physical copy. I did just in case Miss Arney did not get it but my email account was spazzing out too so it is not necessary I don't think but you can if you want to.
ReplyDeleteLauren, actually I just looked at the Oedipus blog and it said to hand it in and put plus five on top Sorry what I wrote before!
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney, is it ok I did not write plus five on the top of the paper I handed in because I did not look at the Oedipus blog before I handed it in? Should I hand it in again tomorrow with plus five?

ReplyDeleteMiss Arney,
ReplyDeleteDoes the word masters test tomorrow count towards our grade? I couldn't rememeber if you said it did or did not.
word masters is for bonus squares
ReplyDeleteHow far should we have gotten with the TKM study guides? Also will we be going over them in class?
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney,
ReplyDeleteAre we allowed to email you w/o it being an assignment or is that only for our parents?
I'm slightly confused with how we should be filling out the boxes in the TKAM study guide;
ReplyDeleteI feel like I'm falling behind because of it, but i still understand the novel. Will we have to hand in the study guides on a later date for a grade?
No, Ally; you won't be evaluated that way. I know you guys are confused and I apologize that I haven't been there to help guide you. I'll make certain you guys are in a better place soon.
ReplyDeleteHow far into the study guides should we be at this point? Also, how should we be filling out the boxes with the motifs?
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney,
ReplyDeleteI handed my vocabulary sentences in early yesterday, but looking back I think I forgot to put a +5 on the top. Is it okay if I take it back tomorrow from Miss Iorio to put the +5 on?

ReplyDeleteOk thank you so mush. I will look tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteWhat point of view is Oedipus written in?
ReplyDeleteJulie,
ReplyDeleteI believe the point of view is 3rd person omniscient (I'm not sure if I spelled that right though).
since it's a play, it's multiple 1st person POV and dialogue
ReplyDeleteOops, thank you Miss Arney!
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney or any one else,
ReplyDeleteIf we are using a portion of a quote should we use ...?
Also if a quote goes from one page to another do you write both pages or the first one?
yes, and use both pages (Sophocles 87-88)
ReplyDeleteIn the TKMB study guide chapter 8 I'm not sure what to write for Parallelism of Symbolism (Setting/theme) for snow and fire.
ReplyDeletefor the novel notes if you are working with a group, for the name should you list everybody or should each person's card just have their name?
ReplyDeleteIs the POV multiple 1st person and dialogue or just multiple 1st person
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what i should write as the year on the first novel note card?
ReplyDeleteI have a few questions regarding the first card for novel notes.
ReplyDelete1. Year Published - What year should we say the book was published in since it is a play from so long ago?
2. Author's nationality - should we look up background information on Sophocles or simply write something like "Greek"?
3. Symbols/Allsuions/Themes - How many of each should there be?
Annette: that is something we will probably have to discuss
ReplyDeleteJason: I need your name to be highlighted or clearly incidated on your cards; however, I need to know the names of your groupmates as well. And, it's both.
Tara & Marissa: the text should have the approximate year the play was written. That is what should be indicated as the date of "publication" - not the copyright.
He is Greek
and there should be as many as you can find.
Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI am really confused... What is the point of view of Oedipus the King?
ReplyDeleteErin, above Miss. Arney stated that it is multiple first person and dialogue.
ReplyDeletewould the publication date be 1996 according to this copy of the play?
ReplyDeleteWould allusions from Oedipus be him referring to the gods or referring to previous events that had occured?
ReplyDeleteDanielle, I am having the same problem. I do not know what to use for allusions!
ReplyDeleteSomebody help us!!!!
ReplyDeleteDo the allusions have to be explained?
ReplyDeleteThank you Danielle!
ReplyDeleteLauren, I'm not sure but I think so.
Ok, Thanks Missy
ReplyDeleteLauren, what I am doing is finding a direct example from the text and then elaborating it by explaining how it is an allusion or what it means.
ReplyDeleteThanks Danielle!
ReplyDeleteMythological references are allusions to us.
ReplyDeleteThe references to the gods are allusions.
and you should explain the significance of the god/dess BRIEFLY.
Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you Miss Arney!
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney,
ReplyDeleteThere was some confusion in class about if the vocab test is tomorrow, because some people's flashcards have not been returned.
Is the vocab test still tomorrow?
Thanks!
Feel better!
Tracey,
ReplyDeleteI was also wondering the same thing, because I never got back my flashcards.
Thanks!
On the agenda sheet Miss Arney said that the vocabulary test is moved until the monday that we get back from break.
ReplyDeleteErika,
ReplyDeleteI just checked and I don't see where it says that.
Tracey: it's under the "newsflash" info on the Eng9H homepage and under the agenda.
ReplyDeleteOk thank you!
ReplyDelete**Tally ends**
ReplyDeleteIs there any interest in a holiday-related grammar challenge for the break?
ReplyDeletelet me know.
Miss. Arney, for the journal what do you mean by the two titles you are supposed to give the two chapters you choose?
ReplyDeleteThe chapters in TKM don't have titles; they are numbered. You are going to make up a title for the chapter (two chapters, actually)
ReplyDeleteI am very interested in a holiday grammar challenge!
ReplyDeleteOk, thanks for the clarification Miss. Arney. Also a grammar challenge would probably be good, thanks!
ReplyDeleteI think a holiday grammar challenge is a good idea.
ReplyDeleteHappy Holidays, scholars. Since I have reached 3 requests, I will post a holiday challenge. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteIn the journal are the titles that we make up for the chapters supposed to be in the topic sentence for each body paragraph?
ReplyDeleteAnnette: Yes...that is technically your "argument" for the paragraph: that Lee could have titled the chapter with that title
ReplyDeleteShould the grabber in the introduction relate to the themes in the story we are using, things that are not named such as the titles not named, or how they both are connected? I am not sure what to focus on for it!
ReplyDeleteDanielle: EITHER, not both
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney when you said on the daily agenda to finish re-reading TKaM did you mean re-reading the entire book or up to chapter 11
ReplyDeleteWhat is TKMB's genre?
ReplyDeleteBilly: The test this Friday is up through ch 11, but you need to reread the remainder of the book. We will continue to focus on the first part of the novel this week; however, I don't think it's possible to fully reread the book over next weekend...so start now!
ReplyDeleteAnnette: historical fiction or bildingsroman
Ms. Arney, how are we supposed to wtite the "TITLES" to the paragraphs for the chapter? As in, what format should they be written in?
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney,
ReplyDeleteFor number 3 on the Holiday Grammar Challenge (The horse knows the way through the white and drifted snow.), is "drifted" a participle?
Also, I'm not sure if you can answer this one, but for number 1 (Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house we go.), does "to Grandmother's house" modify "go" or "Over the river and through the woods"?

I posted this here as well as in the Grammar Thread because I'm not sure if the Grammar Thread is closed. Miss Iorio posted "Tally ends" there; does this mean that this was her last comment or that the Grammar Thread is closed?
Tally closed means we stopped participation points at this point and I need to calculate from that point forward. It is a code to us, not for you to worry about.
ReplyDeleteDrifted is a participle which means it is an adjective.
I can't answer the question for #1
And, yes, I guess I typed a typo for Spock.
Miss. Arney, that white packet you gave us, is that supposed to be finished over break and if so should we do it on looseleaf?
ReplyDeleteLauren:
ReplyDeleteYes, it's homework...and you may complete the answers directly in the packet.
Ok, thanks. Also sorry I forget for the journal in GELAT what does the A stand for?
ReplyDeleteLauren, the A stands for annotate. It means to summerize the story in one sentance. The example Miss Arney gave us was it was like the movie announcer voice.
ReplyDeleteOh ok thanks so much Julie!
ReplyDeleteno problem
ReplyDeleteThank you, Miss Arney!
ReplyDeleteNow that I have looked at the journal assignment for the first time, I have a few questions:

- The commentaries tell how the title pertains to the lesson.
If so, aren't the commentaries explaining the topic sentence and not the concrete detail they follow?
By the way, the comments on this blog are being posted so fast that two new comments appeared while I was writing out my questions!
ReplyDeleteJeremy, the grabber should talk about a general statement having to do with either themes or things that are not named. ReplyDeleteTara, that is kind of what I did for it. I said In To Kill a Mockingbird Jem and Scout learn then thematic statement. So I just elaborated a little to make it fit in to the introduction a little better. Maybe either could work though but I am not 100% sure sorry!
ReplyDeleteSorry that was me! Sometimes my computer spazzes and logs onto my sister's account because it remembers her username. It is really weird!
ReplyDeleteThanks Danielle!
ReplyDeleteFor the grammar packet, are we to do it on looseleaf or in the packet?
ReplyDeleteAnd also, are the directions saying that label the underlined words as one of the parts of speech they listed? Or are those two separate directions?
Thanks
We can do it directly on the packet. I don't know the answer to your second question, sorry!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I came on to ask several questions about the journal, but they have already been answered! So thank you everyone, you were a big help haha!
ReplyDeleteI am confused by the journal, are the two direct quotes being used as our concrete details or commentaries? Since we have one quote per paragraph, where do we place it?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I understand that the study guide does not have to be filled in completely and it is supposed to help us along the way. But I was wondering if we will be handing it in to Miss Arney to look at?
ReplyDeleteAlso, the test on Friday is for Chapters 1-11. Does that mean that we should only have chapters 1-11 filled in for the study guide?
Thank you
Sorry for the delay in getting back to the blog. I'm going to address these questions from the bottom up.
ReplyDeleteNOTE: some of you are asking questions that are already answered on the blog.
Tracey:
RE: journal.
Does this help?
Thank you so much this clears everything up!
ReplyDeleteand Happy New Year!
miss arney,
ReplyDeletefror the grammar challenge do we have to diagram evey wordin the sentence?
-Shannon
Thank you so much Miss Arney!
ReplyDeleteShannon, I'm pretty sure.... that's what I did.
Can the examples of theme be taught to another character in the book besides Scout for the journal?
ReplyDeleteShannon: Yes; that's part of teh challenge.
ReplyDeleteTracey & Marissa: you're very welcome. Tracey: did I actually answer your question on the grammar hw?
Emily: The lesson can be learned by Jem as well. Does that help you? Keeping to Part I of the book, that's about the most we can focus on.
For the journal should the chapters be listed in the introduction?
ReplyDeleteMy earlier question went unanswered:
ReplyDeleteWhat is the format for writing the "TITLES" for each chapter?
I would really appreciate if I can get this question answered by Ms. Arney or by anyone. I finished writing it and I'm about to type it but I need to know so I get it right.
Thank so much to anyone who can help!!!
As in is the format fot the TITLES like this:
ReplyDelete"Title for chapter"
or like this
'Title for chapter'?
Thanks again!
sorry once again, but in quoting a conversation is the format like this?:
ReplyDelete"'do you think Boo Radley is alive?''His name's Arthur and he's still alive'" (Lee 48)
This is a quote that I am using and I just wanted to be sure if that was correct. Thanks once again
Lauren: No; just the overarching thematic concept and then the theme. The titles are your topic sentences.
ReplyDeleteAmanda: "Title for Chapter"
Use your MLA handbook for help with quoting.
Thanks, Miss. Arney!
ReplyDeleteIn which part of GELAT should the title, author, and genre (TAG) fit into?
ReplyDeleteNever mind, I went back to my Oedipus essay and found it!
ReplyDeleteI know we have to use one quote for a concrete detail but if we do that can we use a quote for a commentary as well?
ReplyDeleteDanielle,
ReplyDeleteI know quotes are concrete details, so I think your commentary should be explaining the quote and how it relates to the theme. I'm not sure if you can use another quote for commentary. However, Miss Arney said if you need to you can use another quote as your second concrete detail.
Marissa: GOOD THINKING! I'm proud of you!
ReplyDeleteDanielle: I'm not certain how you would do it, but then again I've learned not to doubt you... make certain it analyzes or links and, yes, you can.
Marissa,
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question TAG should be somewhere in your introduction!
Thank you Tracey and Miss Arney!
ReplyDeleteWe are supposed to ICE quotes right? So if we have to is it okay if our journal is a little more than eight sentences for the body paragraphs?
ReplyDeleteYes! The quotes MUST be ICE'd.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteAlso i have a question about the conclusion sentence, is there anything specific we are supposed to mention? should it summarize the whole paragraph or just the themes or chapter titles we chose?
ReplyDeleteDo the titles to our chapters, in the journal, have to have the thematic concept that we're using for that chapter in the title?
ReplyDeleteTara: your closing sentence should tie everything together and transition to the next paragraph
ReplyDeleteSarah: it should reflect the thematic concept but it doesn't necessarily need to STATE the thematic concept
Okay that's good!Thank you Miss Arney!
ReplyDeleteOkay, thank you, Miss Arney!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Miss Arney!
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney,
ReplyDeleteMarissa mentioned about it before but was able to figure it our on her own ....
- What are the part for GELATIN?
-Shannon
Also my book does not have name of chapters just numbers?
ReplyDelete-Shannon
I wish you had it in your notes from the essay...
ReplyDeleteG: Grabber
E: Elaborate/ explain grabber
L: LINK to literature (This can be seen in Harper Lee's novel...)
A: Annotate (movie announcer voice)
T: Thesis (and TAG if you haven't done so already)
INtroduction
And no one has chapter titles - Harper Lee only used numbers; YOU are creating them. That's the point of the journal.
Is the title of the book underlined and quoted? I always get confused with that.
ReplyDeleteKevin,
ReplyDeleteThe title of the book is underlined.
i had it in my notes but was confused about the IN part at the end sorry
ReplyDeleteThanks though!
-shannon
Also just to be sure when i cite my quotes does the citation (Lee pg#) go inside the quotation marks or after?
ReplyDelete-Shannon
Kevin: Didn't I just give you a "cheat sheet" about that today?
ReplyDeleteShannon: we've reviewed this. Check your notes or your MLA Handbook.
I think there's also a model paragraph using embedded quotes on the website!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteFound it in my handbook
ReplyDeleteThanks!

Thank you Miss Arney!
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU SO MUCH MISS ARNEY!
ReplyDeleteDuring the discussion in class today, we talked about Jem and Scout recieving a pocket watch from Boo. A chain with a knife was also attached to the pocketwatch. What is the symbolicness of the knife?
ReplyDeleteMegan,
ReplyDeleteIn class we discussed how the knife was more foreshadowing that Boo would be the guardian and savior of Jem and Scout. This is because when Boo goes to save Jem and Scout, he grabs a kitchen knife. That is the connection between the two.
Hope that helps!
Thank you Miss Arney! Sorry this is a delayed thank you!
ReplyDeleteMegan, I agree with Tracey about the knife's symbol.
ReplyDeleteThanks!! Tracey and Danielle!
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney, for the allusions, should we be copying the quotes down or the explainations of the meanings of them?
ReplyDeleteYou don't need to quote the allusion - just paraphrase the context in which it appears and explain what the allusion means.
ReplyDeleteMiss. Arney, I just wanted to let you know that in Social Studies were having a test next Friday.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know the day when we can recite the prepositions for the extra credit?
ReplyDeleteKelly: any day up through next Friday.
ReplyDeleteLauren: Thank you for letting me know! The TKM test will be next Thursday (I'm sorry - that will be the only day to do it)...
EVERYONE: there is a new grammar challenge on the website and a brief update on the agenda page.
Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI know we are not supposed to talk about the grammar challenge but in number three of this week's is carbon monoxide a compound noun? I do not know if this can be answered because it is a grammar challenge.
ReplyDeleteDanielle: I'm so sorry that I didn't see this question earlier.
ReplyDeleteAttention everyone...PLEASE check out the webpage for a midterm review sheet and notes for the upcoming week's schedule.
Mrs. Arney,
ReplyDeleteI am not sure if you would rather have the TKM test Friday or Thursday but Ms. Caul cancelled our AP test for Friday. In case it would be better to have the test on Friday
Is there going to be a grammar challenge this week?
ReplyDeleteOMG, thank you, Marissa. You guys are great when I slack off!
ReplyDeleteTeresa: Actually, I would LOVE to do the test on Friday, but I kind of worked everything out to make certain we have enough time to discuss the midterm essay. TY for letting me know
Grammar challenge is up!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney on page 132 it says "As if that were not enough, the state legislature was called into emergency session and Attics left us for two weeks. The Governor was eager to scrape a few barnacles of the ship of state: therewere sitdown strikes in Birmingham; bread lines in the cities grew longer, people in the country grew poorer"
ReplyDeleteWhat does this part mean? Was there some sort of legal dispute in Birmingham causing Atticus to attend to it?
Is this passage only given to show setting or is it something more maybe saying that Atticus does other things other than being Tom Robinson's lawyer?
I was just wondering as I didn't understand what it was trying to say.
From my understanding, Atticus's position is actually a government position (it is an elected post). In the midst of the Great Depression, the Governor is trying to elminate unnecessary positions.
ReplyDeleteThe rest of the quote reminds you of that fact (Great Depression); so, yes, it is to establish setting.
Also what about that whole section after Miss Alexandra comes back, where Scout takes about the Sinkfield's. I don't understand what she is talking about. For me the passage is on pg 148.
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney,
ReplyDeleteFor the Preposition Challenge, are we allowed to write down the words on a piece of paper in front of you, or is it mandatory to recite them out loud? (I'm more of a visual person haha)
I understand that the review sheet given to us for the midterm is to be studied not only on the definitions and what they mean, but to also go into a greater depth and find examples, how they are used, and things like that.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I was wondering if this was just a guide and that there is more to the midterm than just the Literary Terms listed and Mythology and Figurative Essays? For example, is Oedipus and the Odysessy on it?
So pretty much, is the midterm on strictly what is listed on the review sheet?
Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks, and ok I will!
ReplyDeleteteacher note: end tally here
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteGuys: my note does not mean the blog is closed; it is just to help me keep track of where I left off with participation points
ReplyDeleteFor the persuasive essay on the midterm in the outline of the introduction it says we have to "transition to topic/ link to literature and annotate story" this would be applied to the TKAM novel, right?
ReplyDeleteLauren: yes
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney, the worksheet for TKMB [symbols] that we got in class Friday, is that also for homework along with the essay outline sheet?
ReplyDeleteNo, Nanxi...your only homework is to read the documents I gave you. Hold onto the symbols sheet.
ReplyDeleteGuys: visit the website for more info about the midterm and the persuasive essay. I hope it helps.
ReplyDeleteGood luck on all of your midterms.
ReplyDeleteIf there is a quote you know you want to use from the novel can you write it on your paper with the citations as a concrete detail?
ReplyDeleteDanielle:
ReplyDeleteYou do not need to refute the specific points made in paragraph 2 in your pro paragraphs. Just find two general arguments that are the most persuasive.
As for the novel, I'd rather you simply paraphrase as close as you can and not worry about the citation.
Does THIS make sense? :-)
Yes it does make sense Thank You Miss Arney! I was just mixed up what to base the pro paragraphs on but now I think I get it better.
ReplyDeleteFor the essay we are writing on the midterm I am saying that Atticus is a hypocrite.
ReplyDeleteI'm not so sure if that made sense I am more and more doubting myself everytime I think about this essay.
Miss Arney, on the example paragraph about TKM, you cited the paraphrases. Should we cite the paraphrases in our essay tomorrow?
ReplyDeleteFor the mythology portion, how many symbols should we know for each god/goddess?
ReplyDeleteI read Danielles post but I still have a questions. I am proving that Atticus is a hero but I am having trouble finding concrete proof in the article becuase when I read it over a couple of times I just saw his refutes to Freedmans proposal. So can we find reasons that he is not not a hero? I don't know if this makes sense, I am a little confused.
ReplyDeleteErika, I think if I am interperting your question right you could probably say a reason why Freedman thinks he is a hypocrite and then refute it using some of your own reasoning. I was having trouble too because I felt I could make up better arguments than some of Barge's.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I am confused on what we should base our thesis statement on, Should we base it on our pro side, con side, both, or something else?
I am not sure if this will make sense but, how do you cite a quote that has a quote inside of it?
ReplyDelete
