I give up! Since we seem to be connecting Twilight (and the rest of the series) to class curriculum every single day, let's be serious about it. Use this thread to:
* find thematic and characterization connections to the literature we cover in class
* compare Edward, Bella, Jacob, etc. to the characters we have encountered this year.
* discuss the characters, themes, plot developments, and possibilities within the series itself.
* locate possible allusions to Romeo and Juliet within the Twilight series
* compare the books to the films.
Did I miss anything?

Twilight and Romeo and Juliet are similar and different in many ways. First, Bella and Edward love each other even though it is forbidden like Romeo and Juliet. (But it is not techanically Romeo's "first love.") Secondly, society keeps them apart. For example, Romeo is from Montague and Juliet is from Capulate. These two houses are enemies. In New Moon, Volturis don't believe in Bella to keep their secrets. That's why they tell Edward to change Bella into a vampire. Thirdly, They end up getting married. For example, Romeo and Juliet professes their love after seeing each other for few hours at the party. They also promise to get married the next day. In Breaking Dawn, Edward and Bella get married. Finally, they end up dead. For example, Romeo dies because he believes that Juliet dies, but she is only asleep. When Juliet wakes up, she found out Romeo is dead and stabbed herself. By turning Bella into vampire, she is "dead" according to people.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jimin.Their are so many similarities when comparing .Twighlight and Romeo and Juliet.A reader of both books would think it's by purpose. Of course the main theme Is forbidden love and star-crossed lovers show their similarities. In,Romeo and Juliet,Romeo is depressed because he is rejected by Rosaline but once he catches a glimpse of of Juliet he becomes infatuated with her. This true love creates a promblem because Romeo soon finds out that Juliet is a capulet just as he falls in love with an enemy of his family. In Twighlight, Edward loves Bella at first sight right away. This happens in science class when he smell Bella's desired scent.Edward also has a promblem. He knows he cannot fall in love with a human, being he is a vampire but can't help his feelings for her are too strong.Second,I also beleive that Stephanie Myer used her character,Rosaline to connect to the past relationship that Romeo which he wanted but forgotten. In Twighlight,Rosaline crushes on Edward but knows she cannot compete with Bella. So rosaline almost like a symbol of the love that could of been if the star-crossed lovers never met.Another huge connection is the fact Edward immediatly wants to die and give himself to the volturi when he believes Bella committed suicide. Also Bella will participate in reckless actions in order to see Edward again even if their delusions. In Romeo and Juliet will do anything to see Romeo again even if it takes killing herself. Both couples share that dramatic love connection between themselves.Their also small details like the fact Edward nicknames Bella,Love .Bella sees Edward as light when he glows inthe sunlight but also as saftey and immortality. While Romeo non stop sees Juliet as light from fire, sun and stars. Lastly Edward and Bella watch Romeo and Juliet in class to foreshadow their split.Stephanie Myer uses many allusions to dramatize the gravity of Bella's and Edward's relationship.
ReplyDeleteThe way in which Romeo and Juliet die is very similar to the story of Pyramus and Thisbe. In both Romeo and Juliet and this myth, one of the star-crossed lovers thinks that his love is dead and kills himself. The other star-crossed lover finds him and commits suicide, so that they never have to be apart.
ReplyDeleteAnd what annette said too. Did't there parents try to keep them apart as well. They never saw eachother besides through a hole in the wall. I think.
ReplyDeleteWithin one of the novels ( I believe New Moon), there is a reference to Romeo and Juliet and how similar the lives of Bella and Edward are to theirs. Also within the novel, as soon as Edward thinks Bella is dead he himself wishes to die. This matches with the plot of Romeo and Juliet.
ReplyDeleteRomeo and Juliet are very similiar to Bella and Edward. Romeo is passionately in love for Juliet and wishes to be with her always, even if that means stalking her outside her balcony. Edward also proves his love for Bella by protecting her, maybe too much, and by spending time with her, even if that means standing in her room to watch her sleep. Juliet and Bella are the same, they are younger than their partners, Juliet is only 13 to Romeo's 17 just as Bella is only 17 to Edward's 110. Juliet and Bella are also the same in that they are both rediculously, over-dramatic in love. Juliet has only met Romeo for less than ten hours and now she wanted to marry him the very next morning. Bella on the other hand, resorted to stalking Edward by using the internet as her reference and also by watching him intently from afar. (Bella's getting her style from Romeo too much). These examples of overly passionate teens, excluding Edward, proves that Romeo and Juliet are foils for Edward and Bella.
ReplyDeleteLauren it's New Moon. Throughout New Moon Stephanie Meyer has Bella compare her choice to Juliet's. She compares Jacob to Paris and has Bella wonder what he (Paris)feels after ebing rejected and if it is as bad as Jacob's pain. She always compares herself to Juliet because she says she has no choice and she loves Edward more then anyone else like Juliet loves Romeo more then anyone else.
ReplyDeleteStephanie Meyer also includes Romeo and Juliet in the book series, when Bella is reading it in school and she has to watch the movie. I think this was her way of pointing out the similarities between Romeo and Juliet and Bella and Edward
