Miss Arney, (or anyone who can help), i am very confused by tonights grammar homwork about the active and passive voice. I am stuck on number two and am having trouble figuring it out. it says....
Her blindness during her last years made her final works particularly interesting.
i think made is passive but am not sure, and if it is i do not know how to change the sentence. Please help! Thank you!
How do you change numbers 4 and 9 from passive to active?
4. Her paintings have been shown often in gallery exhibits around the world. 9. Because of her blindness, her style and subject matter were altered from energetic silhouettes to larger canvases in lush colors.
is any linking verb always passive voice as in the vocab sentences because with some of mine, i try to turn them around and it makes them sound really bad.
Annette, I don't think we have to because it was from Act I we learned it but I guess it is general information so maybe know them just in case like Lauren was saying.
When Romeo says he "He jests at scars that never felt a wound." would that be considered apostrophe because he is talking to Mercutio even though he is not there or is it not apostrophe because he is using third person and not saying "You"?
Danielle, I don't know much about apostrophe, but I would say that it is not an apostrophe when Romeo says, "He jests at scars that never felt a wound." I think this because he is saying that more to himself. If he wanted Mercutio to hear, from what I understand of the book (I could easily be wrong about this), Romeo could have just spoken more loudly. I feel like this is not a direct address either. What I said could be very wrong, though. It's just maybe a second opinion what I just posted.
Thank you Erin! I see what your saying how he is kind of more saying it for himself or the reader than to Mercutio like if you compare this to when Juliet says "Romeo, Romeo whereforeart thou Romeo." he isn't being as direct.
Miss, Arney for our journal can we use Romeo in the text also? I have Friar talking to Romeo and Lord Montague then talks to Friar. Is that alright or do you not want Romeo in the journal at all?
This is for Period 4 and if anyone from Period 9 forgot, we don't have to do the appositive sheet for homework we are going to do it in class tomorrow but you still have to recopy the notes on the sheet.
James, like Danielle said, you don't have to do the appositives sheet. However, the appositive would be "one", which is describing "cabin" (a direct object).
Tracey, I don't remember receiving the vocab either. The agenda also says we are supposed to finish Act III of Romeo and Juliet in the study guide but we are only up to scene ii so should we do the rest?
You should have received your vocab cards on the same day of the vocab test last week. For RJ, just read Juliet's soliloquy in III ii. Obviously, we had to fall a little behind last week.
Terence: No....I didn't put it up this weekend b/c people who needed the weekend to do last week's might have gotten confused. Tonight I got home very late from the doctor's office and promised him that I wouldn't sit up. I can't access my webpage from my laptop. I'm sorry - I PROMISE to have it up tomorrow night.
Hey Miss Arney I think you just made a small mistake on the agenda... "The vocab sentences for unit 10 will be due on Monday, 5/17, since there are several people who don't seem to have the flashcards." Shouldn't it be unit 11, not 10 due Monday?
I have a good screenname for one of my people but I am not sure how appropriate a word in it would be so should I not use the name at all or could I use asteriscs instead of some of the actual letters?
Lauren, I don't remember an SAT practice being do this week I know the agenda from last week said it was due so maybe you were looking at the wrong week? I don't think a practice is due tomorrow though.
The vocab will be distributed tomorrow before the test. The flashcards and sentences will be due on Thursday, June 3rd and the test will be on the 4th. There is new info posted on the website, including the essay prompt. Check out the new blog threads, too.
Miss Arney, today in class you said something about extra credit note cards?? Is that for Romeo and Juliet or Lord of the Flies? And also when will that be due?
Megan, the note cards are the novel notes for Romeo and Juliet they are optional and due I think on Monday for extra credit. I don't know if Miss Arney mentioned anything about extra credit for Lord of the Fly novel notes though.
Megan, Here is the link I use for the novel notes. I hope it helps! http://www.prhs.k12.ny.us/fac/arneyd/English%209Honors/English%209H%20Summer%20Reading.htm
Kevin: Leave it in my mailbox...but why wasn't it turned in with the other participation points. Actually, a few people didn't submit their envelopes. I don't know why. If anyone still has coupons, please leave them in an envelope WITH YOUR NAME ON IT in my mailbox in the main office no later than Friday. I expect to have your work / grades back to you by Tuesday. I will post later with the time(s) you can retrieve them.
Miss Arney when I wrote that, I assumed the letter was in the mailbox. Seems to not be there or the most recent mail box that we have. I guess it must got lost in the mail or something? Since I can't find the letter can you put the quiz pass into my participation?
OK, Kevin. The June birthday cards were mailed out in May, so you definitely should have received it by now. I'm sorry that it didn't get to you, but I will count it into your points.
Greetings, Scholars of the Class of 2013. I look forward to reading and responding to your posts on this site. Please note that the "gadgets" on the right-side column of the blog home page are not ads. These are games and resources to help you in class. Sharpen your grammar skills, learn a new SAT vocabulary word, or research some characters in mythology!
Miss Arney, (or anyone who can help), i am very confused by tonights grammar homwork about the active and passive voice. I am stuck on number two and am having trouble figuring it out. it says....
ReplyDeleteHer blindness during her last years made her final works particularly interesting.
i think made is passive but am not sure, and if it is i do not know how to change the sentence. Please help! Thank you!
"Made" is active voice in this situation, if I am correct.
ReplyDeleteThanks Erin!
ReplyDeleteHow do you change numbers 4 and 9 from passive to active?
ReplyDelete4. Her paintings have been shown often in gallery exhibits around the world.
9. Because of her blindness, her style and subject matter were altered from energetic silhouettes to larger canvases in lush colors.
Jeremy,
ReplyDeletefor number 4, you use the object of preposition as the subject.
So i think it would be:
Gallery exhibits around the world have shown her paintings.
as for 9, I am not sure.
Hope that helped!
is any linking verb always passive voice as in the vocab sentences because with some of mine, i try to turn them around and it makes them sound really bad.
ReplyDeleteTerence, I think all linking verbs are passive, and i know what you mean with the sentences, some are hard to make active.
ReplyDeleteI know it is complicated...it means that you should have a set of sentences without any linking verbs. HELPING VERBS, yes; linking verbs, no.
ReplyDeleteOkay Miss Arney and Lauren Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteDid we have grammar homework this weekend because it says "Grammar" on the agenda but I don't remember getting anything?
ReplyDeleteDanielle, I think Miss. Arney said we wouldn't be given grammar homework this weekend and would just have Romeo and Juliet.
ReplyDeleteDanielle, I don't remember getting any grammar hw either, so I don't we have any.
ReplyDeleteThank you Lauren and Annette!
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody know if there is a grammar challenge this week?
ReplyDeleteTracey, I don't see one for this week, so maybe she just hasn't posted it yet.
ReplyDeleteThe grammar challenge is now posted.
ReplyDeletefor tomorrow's test do we need to know the types of sonnets?
ReplyDeleteI am not sure Annette, but I don't think so because we went over that in act one, I guess just in case study them though.
ReplyDeleteAnnette, I don't think we have to because it was from Act I we learned it but I guess it is general information so maybe know them just in case like Lauren was saying.
ReplyDeleteWhen Romeo says he "He jests at scars that never felt a wound." would that be considered apostrophe because he is talking to Mercutio even though he is not there or is it not apostrophe because he is using third person and not saying "You"?

ReplyDeleteThank you Erin! I see what your saying how he is kind of more saying it for himself or the reader than to Mercutio like if you compare this to when Juliet says "Romeo, Romeo whereforeart thou Romeo." he isn't being as direct.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Romeo is talking to himself when he says this line and that it is not apostrophe.
ReplyDeleteOk thank you Jason!
ReplyDeleteOn the agenda it says, Grammar Dog: RJ Ex 1 due tomorrow, is that the green packet we got or did we not get this?
ReplyDeleteMegan, I think that is the green packet
ReplyDeleteIs the vocabulary test tuesday? I know the agenda says Monday, but I thought in class you said it was switched to Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteI think the grammer test is Tuesday, Terence. That's what I heard too.
ReplyDeleteI thought it is vocabulary not grammar.
ReplyDeleteThe vocab test is on wednesday.
ReplyDeleteJason, are you sure it's Wednesday? I thought it was going to be on Tuesday; was it changed?
ReplyDeleteJeremy, Jason is right on the agenda it says Wednesday and today Miss Arney told us the vocab test is Wednesday but it was originally Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteIs anyone else confused on the apostrophe homework, for 'write the possesive of the following words?'
ReplyDeleteI don't understand how to make 'factory' and 'table' possessive
Wait, what apostrophe homework? I don't remember getting that.
ReplyDeleteTracey, I believe it is "factory's" and "table's". We are supposed to make the nouns into possessive nouns by adding the apostrophe and a 'S'.
ReplyDeleteLauren, it is the sheet named Use Of The Apostrophe.. I think it was in the mailboxes.
Thanks Nanxi.
ReplyDeleteAlso, what is the R&J SAT Practice due Friday?
It's the second practice test (Writing Test 2) in the green book...the next 6 pages.
ReplyDeleteMiss, Arney for our journal can we use Romeo in the text also? I have Friar talking to Romeo and Lord Montague then talks to Friar. Is that alright or do you not want Romeo in the journal at all?
ReplyDeleteFor number nine on the appos. sheet, I was unsure what the aposotive is, and what it's describing:
ReplyDelete"Uncle Kurt bought a mountain cabin a really big one."
This is for Period 4 and if anyone from Period 9 forgot, we don't have to do the appositive sheet for homework we are going to do it in class tomorrow but you still have to recopy the notes on the sheet.
ReplyDeleteJames, like Danielle said, you don't have to do the appositives sheet. However, the appositive would be "one", which is describing "cabin" (a direct object).
ReplyDeletePeriod 4 the Romeo and Juliet journal is not due on monday Miss Arney moved the due date to friday the 14th.
ReplyDeleteThe agenda says Vocabulary 11 is due Thursday, but I didn't think we received that yet?
ReplyDeleteTracey, I don't remember receiving the vocab either. The agenda also says we are supposed to finish Act III of Romeo and Juliet in the study guide but we are only up to scene ii so should we do the rest?
ReplyDeleteYou should have received your vocab cards on the same day of the vocab test last week.
ReplyDeleteFor RJ, just read Juliet's soliloquy in III ii. Obviously, we had to fall a little behind last week.
Did everybody not receive it?
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone received it.
ReplyDeleteR.I.P.
ReplyDeleteJustin
Did Miss Arney put up this weeks grammar challenge. i can't find it so i guess not but...?
ReplyDeleteTerence:
ReplyDeleteNo....I didn't put it up this weekend b/c people who needed the weekend to do last week's might have gotten confused. Tonight I got home very late from the doctor's office and promised him that I wouldn't sit up. I can't access my webpage from my laptop. I'm sorry - I PROMISE to have it up tomorrow night.
Hey Miss Arney
ReplyDeleteI think you just made a small mistake on the agenda... "The vocab sentences for unit 10 will be due on Monday, 5/17, since there are several people who don't seem to have the flashcards."
Shouldn't it be unit 11, not 10 due Monday?
Yes, Nanxi...you are absolutely correct. This is why I don't teach math.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry for the confusion, guys.
Is the RJ SAT practice 2 from last week and the due was date extended? Or is it another one that we were supposed to do this week?
ReplyDeleteI have a good screenname for one of my people but I am not sure how appropriate a word in it would be so should I not use the name at all or could I use asteriscs instead of some of the actual letters?
ReplyDeleteLauren, I don't remember an SAT practice being do this week I know the agenda from last week said it was due so maybe you were looking at the wrong week? I don't think a practice is due tomorrow though.
ReplyDeleteyes, Danielle. That would be fine :-)
ReplyDelete*due
ReplyDeleteThank you Miss Arney!
ReplyDeleteFor the homework this weekend, should we write that on looseleaf? Or can we do it on the actual page itself?
ReplyDeleteLauren, I think Miss Arney said we can do the homework directly on the worksheet.
ReplyDeleteOK, Thanks Danielle!
ReplyDeleteAre we still going to read Lord of the Flies?
ReplyDeleteMarissa,
ReplyDeleteToday in class, Miss Arney said we will be reading Lord of the Flies quite fast and having long discussions.
Do we do the grammar homework for tonight directly on the sheet or on looseleaf?
ReplyDeleteDanielle,
ReplyDeleteI believe you can do it directly on the sheet.
Tracey: Thank you. Yes, you may do it directly on the page.
ReplyDeletePOLL: please let me know which day works best for a vocab test for you guys: Thurs, Fri, or Mon.
Miss Arney announced today in class as a result of the voting at the Vocabulary Test is Monday.
ReplyDeleteFor those of you that need the website link,
http://www.prhs.k12.ny.us/fac/arneyd/English%209Honors/HOME%20PAGE%20english9honors.htm
Thank you Tracey and Miss Arney!
ReplyDeleteTracey:
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sweetie, for putting the update here and for posting the weblink for those who cannot access the page!!!!
Miss Arney,
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if we were going to have different homework in the grammar dog packet over the weekend since we already did exercise 3?
Teresa, on the agenda for this week it says the rest of the grammar dog packet is due on Friday so all of the exercises besides 1,2, and 3.
ReplyDeleteAre the vocab sentences and flashcards due Friday like it says on last week's agenda or next Wednesday like it says on this week's agenda?
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney,
ReplyDeleteDid we receive the new vocabulary? I don't think I did?
Danielle,
ReplyDeleteI think that since this week's agenda was just posted and is more recent, that the vocabulary is due next Wednesday. But I'm not positive.
Also...
Is the Romeo and Juliet Essay is going to be take-home?
The vocab will be distributed tomorrow before the test.
ReplyDeleteThe flashcards and sentences will be due on Thursday, June 3rd and the test will be on the 4th. There is new info posted on the website, including the essay prompt. Check out the new blog threads, too.
Thanks Miss. Arney!
ReplyDeleteFor the grammardog due friday, can we hand in specific exercises for +5? or do we have to do them all and hand them in at the same time?
ReplyDeleteJames, we can hand in separate ones at a time for +5.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lauren!
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney,
ReplyDeleteMy Lord of the Flies study guide skips from Chapter 6 to Chapter 10...
Thank you Missy and Miss Arney!
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney,
ReplyDeleteWill we be reviewing major topics for the final or just go over main topics this week so we know exactly what to study?!?
Miss Arney,
ReplyDeleteMy printer ran out of black ink, it is ok if I print my essay in a dark blue?
Sorry for the inconvenience,
Tracey Ryan
For the vocab sentences, do they still need to be written with the appositives?
ReplyDeleteYes...I think it is still a whole lot easier than using active voice.
ReplyDeleteOk, thanks Miss. Arney!
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney,
ReplyDeleteIn my intro, I substituted the concept of star-crossed lovers for fate. Is that okay?
Miss Arney, today in class you said something about extra credit note cards?? Is that for Romeo and Juliet or Lord of the Flies? And also when will that be due?
ReplyDeleteAlso, Miss Arney, are you putting up a grammar challenge for this week?
ReplyDeleteMegan, the note cards are the novel notes for Romeo and Juliet they are optional and due I think on Monday for extra credit. I don't know if Miss Arney mentioned anything about extra credit for Lord of the Fly novel notes though.
ReplyDeleteEverything is now posted...novel notes for LOF & / or RJ are due Monday.
ReplyDeleteThe x/c journal
The FINAL grammar challenge :-(
Miss Arney, for the novel notes are we allowed to work in pairs/groups or do we have to work alone?
ReplyDeleteMegan, Miss. Arney said we can work in pairs or groups of three.
ReplyDeleteMiss. Arney, for the journal, does there have to be 25 exchanges between every character included? Or just for the two or three main ones?
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney,
ReplyDeleteAre you going to be posting a review sheet for the final this weekend?
(Similar to the one for the midterm.)
Does anyone know what section the extra credit for the novel notes will go into?
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney, the summer reading link is not coming up where we can find the outline for the novel notes. Is there any other way i can access it?
ReplyDeleteMegan,
ReplyDeleteHere is the link I use for the novel notes. I hope it helps!

Thanks Tracey
ReplyDeleteFor the final does anyone know ifthe review sheet has been put up yet? I don't know if its not there or I'm just missing it
ReplyDeleteI don't think so Kelly.
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney when you mean we need to know the newer vocab, do you mean all the vocab we learned after the midterm?
Kevin, I think Miss. Arney meant that and the vocab that we just received this week
ReplyDeleteLauren,
ReplyDeleteThank you for responding. Yes; the final will have units 1 through 13. The final exam info is now posted on our website.
O alright, thanks Miss Arney.
ReplyDeleteMiss Arney I got a quiz pass for my birthday (June 13). Can you put it into my participation points?
ReplyDeleteKevin: Leave it in my mailbox...but why wasn't it turned in with the other participation points.
ReplyDeleteActually, a few people didn't submit their envelopes. I don't know why. If anyone still has coupons, please leave them in an envelope WITH YOUR NAME ON IT in my mailbox in the main office no later than Friday.

Ok thank you Miss Arney.
