Advice for the Class of 2014 (Incoming 9 Honors Students)

While I cannot invite you into the 8th grade classrooms, you know how much I value your opinions and experience in the class. What would you like to advise (or warn!) your 8th grade peers? Any tips for handling summer reading? How can they learn from your successes and mistakes?

Please remain appropriate! And try not to insult me too much, please!

...and for those of you who have requested a picture of Sawyer, he thanks you!  This one has both of them!

  1. The best way to prepare is to not save Mythology for the last minute. Try to understand it as much as you can because it makes a big difference throughout the year.

  2. If you guys study when studying is needed, read the material you're supposed to read, and do everything Ms.Arney tells you to do you will do just fine.

P.S- Ms.Arney is an amazing teacher. Don't let her scare you. :)

  3. Don't procrastinate and leave everything till the last minute, because then you will have a ton of work. If you balance all the work out, it' s not that bad! Also take advantage of any extra credit Miss. Arney offers, it's extremely helpful.

  4. Make sure that you do almost all of the extra credit and try and hand everything early for bonus points. There is so much extra credit and if you do all of it, it is pretty challenging to do poorly. Also, make sure to constantly participate in class and never come unprepared. Always do the homework and plan out your week- do a little every night, not everything the night before the due date. Good luck... Miss Arney is a great teacher.

  5. Plan out when you have to do things. If something is due later in the week do it the day you get it and not leave work until the last minute. If you have an essay make sure you DO NOT leave it till the day or two days before it is due. Bonus points really help boost your grade especially grammar challenges and handing things in early. And don't freak out if you get one or two bad grades because there are so many other grades it will barely count. Go to extra help before any major tests such as Mythology, TKAM, and Romeo and Juliet because you get study tips and a lot of the things mentioned are on the test. Also the first two weeks are crazy so eventually you will get adjusted it is not that bad. Miss Arney is awesome so you will have fun and hope you have an awesome time next year!

  6. Use all the extra credit (also the blog for people who are shy and don't participate in class) oppurtunity! this helps your grade alot because it fills in for bad quiz and test. Becasue there are some easy homework assignments and many homeworks, one bad grade won't hurt you as much. Miss Arney is awesome! So you will have fun and hope you have an awesome time next year! By the way, Miss Arney just loves to scare you. Some people gets used to it, but i can't ;)

  7. Read Mythology carefully because that is pretty much the whole first quarter. Do all of the extra credit! Don't be afraid of all of the grammar homework since one bad grade doesn't kill your average.

  8. Constantly visit Miss Arney's website for pointers about extra credit, helpful links, and more details about assignments spoke about in class. It is easier to see all of your assignments and what to do when. Also, approach Miss Arney if you have conflicts with other classes, she is very flexible! Participate and do all of the extra credit!

  9. This English class is amazing. If you are thinking about dropping it wait a couple of weeks and see how you like it. It might be crazy at first but you get into a normal routine. Try to do as much extra credit as you can because it will effect your grade

  10. I enjoyed this class, and I'm glad i remained in it! You will learn a lot, more than just english. But for summer reading, i would recommend that you annotate the novels, and for mockingbird you should take notes on what you think are symbols, or things that may have a deeper meaning. Definitely to all the extra credit, and check the class blog & website frequently! Good luck next year!!

  11. When reading Mythology, make sure you take really good notes, because it comes back to haunt you throughout the entire year. Even though it is a large portion of the first semester, it is spoken about all year long. So if you take good notes in the summer when you read for the first time and keep them in your binder (which is huge), you can continually add to them. That way, when Mythology eventually shows up on your final, you will have all of your notes ready.
Same with To Kill A Mockingbird, fill out most of the study guide because it helps you to understand the book better. There are a ton of symbols so if you keep track of them it will help a lot!

    Good luck!!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Also, extra credit helps tremendously! If you do all of the weekly grammar challenges and participate in class for Participation Points, it all adds up and can eventually save your grade!

  13. Don't save mythology for the last day of summer....

  14. Make sure that you do as much extra credit done as you can and do your assignments as soon as you can. It is not easy to do them the night before they are do, and you get extra credit for handing things early. Also, go to extra help even if you are not struggling, before a test. Miss Arney has review cards that help a lot for test, so try to go. Good luck, next year.

  15. Don't be scarred if you get a 5 on your homework, Miss Arney gives so much extra credit that you wont have to worry about seeing grades less than a 20. Just be sure to do as much extra credit as you can. I regret not taking advantage of it from the beginning.
Also, once you learn a topic don't let it go in one ear and out the other because you will see it again later- I assure you.

Don't let all this stuff scare you, the worst thing you could do is drop out. Just stick through it and you'll see that its not as hard as it seems

    Good Luck (:

  16. Take advantage of extra credit--especially Grammar Challenges. They are a little bit of extra credit you can do each week that helps boost your grade. Also, mythology seems scary, and it still is, but take alot of notes because they will help when it comes to tests and Miss Arney will even give you extra credit for it. Even if your afraid of the class, just try it out for the first couple of weeks and eventually the work gets easier. Good Luck with summer reading!!

  17. Make sure you do as much extra credit as you possibly can.
Take very careful notes on Mythology when you read it LONG BEFORE THE LAST DAY OF SUMMER. DO NOT PUT IT OFF TO THE LAST MINUTE! Pay special attention to star-crossed lovers... You'll be seeing those again.
One or two bad grades will not destroy your average if you do the extra credit. Especially grammar challenges. Those are a good way to earn extra credit while also expanding on your knowledge of grammar.
Go to extra help. That is one of the biggest things I regret. I didn't go to extra help until the end of the year for the Romeo and Juliet one and no matter what my grade is (...) I know it is a lot higher than I would have gotten without having gone to extra help. Plus extra help is a good opportunity to earn more extra credit points.
Do not stress too much about this year. The first few weeks may seem very difficult, but try not to drop out. You may be tempted to... DON'T. As Miss Arney says, she "throws you into the fire" in the beginning of the year, but then you adjust to the work load and everything seems a lot easier. THIS IS A GREAT CLASS TO TAKE. You will be so much better at formal (essay) writing when you are done with this class and probably much more prepared for the bigger, more important tests in the future (Regents, SAT's...). Miss Arney is an excellent teacher and keep in mind while you are working very hard that Miss Arney also works just as hard if not harder. She is a very fair teacher and is very understanding of major things. But don't use that to get out of work. Also, Miss Arney will postpone tests and does not plan a big test on the same day you have another big test in a difficult class like AP world or biology.
Good luck and have fun next year!

  18. My best advice is to do homeworks as you receive them. Try to hand everything in as early as you can to receive extra points. It also gets it out of the way so that worksheets and assignments do not pile up for the end of the week. Organize and time manage when you will do each assignment, that is one of the most important things to figure out how to do in September!

    ReplyDelete
  19. BIGGEST THING: START THE SUMMER READING IN JUNE/JULY!!! DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!
Even though it seems like it may be a lot, it really isn't as long as you spread it out over the whole summer and don't try to cram it all in in September.
The first week of this class may seem like h---, but honestly, it is probably the hardest week of them all, as you are still getting used to the increased workload.
Miss Arney is a great teacher, and you will really enjoy the year, especially the Mythology and Romeo and Juliet units :). Miss Arney gives a huge amount of extra credit, and if you do it all, you will not have to worry about seeing the occasional ? (or even ?!) on your work.
Overall, do not be afraid of this class and do not be afraid of Miss Arney even if she scares you during the first few days.

    P.S. I really can't insult you, Miss Arney? :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Do all the grammar challenges even if they are not correct, all the extra credit opportunities, participate (especially in class), turn in all your work early, and try to do your best on the vocab. Basically, hoard all the extra credit points you can!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Like everyone has said, make sure you do the extra credit and dont leave summer reading until the last minute. If you do, it deffinatly will come back to haunt you when it's time to go over them in class.
Also if you aren't good with grammar, the diagraming that you learn (though it may be scary at first) and the grammar challenges really help you understand what Miss Arney talks about in class and although you have probobly heard bad things about her, Miss Arney really is a great teacher.
One more thing, dont leave ANY work until the day before, espically essays. Always try getting work in early for the bonus points and even if you do procrastinate, which I deffinatly advise you not to because it does reflect in your work, doing the extra credit and it will balance out any poor grades.

  22. Make sure to read all the books, and never just read the spark notes. You can look over spark notes to understand it better but you have to read the books over summer and throughout the year. Over summer make sure you know Mythology because if you leave it last minute it will come back and haunt you. Take this class because Miss Arney is a great teacher and she will help you become a better student.

  23. this class is prob thee most entertaining class, and it makes you enjoy english. the books you read are so good and everything u learn in the class is good MINUS GRAMMER. do every extra help and extra credit for grammer. procrastination is your worsssst eneemy. but besides all that i really enjoyed this class and learned alot.
and dont freak over summer reading or mythology there not bad at allllll.

    ReplyDelete
  24. As Paige said, don't freak over summer reading. I know that you now also have to read 3 regular english books but they are quick and easy reads. You will only be discussing them and some are very interesting. Do take this class. It is a good class to be in and Miss Arney is a great teacher.

  25. HI new honor students! are you scared about next year? well don't be. Miss Arney is really nice and funny. And no we are not lying to you. Anyway the extra credit is really important especially the grammar challenges. I know that you guys have to read those three other books but don't worry about them. And Then There Were None is a good book and To Kill A Mockingbird is full of symbols and then there is mythology. Well it is not as bad as it looks because it is filled with little short stories like Pandora and other Greek gods and goddesses. As for the class do not freak out if you get a 45 or even a question mark on a quiz or grammar homework. trust me we have all gotten that at one point or another. Again I cannot stress how great the extra credit is it helps your average a lot. Also there is priceton pirsuit again yeahhh!!!! HAHA but this is different you can use words that other people have brought in and it is not a death match. Anyway you will have a great time just do not drop out the first week becuase if you stay in through september you will really see why we all think that she is a great teacher.

  26. My recommendations for how to execute summer reading:
    1. START ASAP! No time like the present ;)
    2. Read the first three books that you have no work for first.
    3. Read And Then There Were None then To Kill A Mockingbird.
    4. Try to have that done by August 1 so that you can dedicate August to mythology so that you are not rushed and can really pay attention. mythology is a major part of English 9 Honors and you constantly reference past myths!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Don't get scared the first few weeks of school the work load is a lot but over time it balances out. For tips over the summer I would do like Kelly said read the books you have no work for first and then move into And Then There Were None and To Kill A Mockingbird. Try to understand TKAM as best as you can but if you can't dont worry we go over it plenty in class. As for Mythology read that last so it is fresh in your mind and try to understand the characters before you go into class that way you have a backround understanding and things dont get too overwhelming. Also do extra credit, it realllly helps! Overall, just work hard and you'll do fine.

  28. Tips to Survive in English 9H:

    1. Manage your time - Don't save everything for the last minute. If you have to do an essay but its due in 2 weeks, start on it ASAP and work in portions.

    2. Take Advantage of Extra Credit - You get easy points for completing a Grammar Challenge or handing something in early. Though I never did a Grammar Challenge, I tried to hand things in early as it boosted my average.

    3. Go To Extra Helps - Why? They are helpful and definetly get you a better grade.

    4. Ask questions - If you don't get something, ask about it. What's to lose?

    5. Have Fun - Wow, what a corney tip right? No but seriously have some fun in the class. Laugh a little, share a joke, make funny vocab sentences etc. But when Miss Arney wants you to be serious, be serious or your going to get the death stare (BUM BUM BUM!!!!)

5.5 - Dont Text in her class - Just don't.

  29. Yeah, do not stress out about having to read three extra books. They are easy, and it is not that hard to balance reading those with Miss Arney's books. I read several books last summer that were not required and I was finished with And Then There Were None, To Kill a Mockingbird, Mythology, and all of the activities due with each of those long before September. Do not worry about those three extras at all. Also, And Then There Were None is a very quick read. It is easy and for the most part uncomplicated. It is a very interesting book and appeals to a wide audience because it is so suspenseful that it may be difficult to put that book down. Mythology is Mythology... Not the most entertaining, but if you start it by early August you should be fine. At first I thought that To Kill a Mockingbird was very boring... It took me longer than it usually takes me to read in order to read Part I of To Kill a Mockingbird, but Part II is where it picks up. After Part I it's an excellent book, in my opinion.

  30. Sorry, forgot to add this to the previous post, but don't even think about having a phone visible in that class or anywhere near Miss Arney. AND DON'T CHEAT ON ANYTHING!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah, definetly no cell phones in her class or in a 2 mile radius. She has eyes in the back of her head when it comes to phones =)She once was facing the board giving a lesson and all of a sudden she shot out of the room and all we heard was "Give me your phone". I don't understand how she could possibly see it but just make sure you don't use your phone in her class.
And definetly don't stress about summer reading. Because it seems like a lot, but all of the regular books will be a breeze and you will probably actually like them. And if you are worried that much you can probably find the short ones. lol. But i do recommend that u start now. And Then There Were None is not bad at all, and To Kill A Mockingbird isn't too bad either but you will understand it more when Miss Arney goes over it in class. But when it comes too Mythology, dont be intimidated by it however you should definetly start it by August 10th, the latest. Like Kelly said, I would aim for August 1st.
The first few weeks of this class are gonna b tough but it is a really fun class and Miss Arney is a really good teacher. If you are thinking about dropping it I really dont think you should but you should atleast try to get through September and see how it goes. Going from Ms. DeNoyelles to regular will probably be too easy for most of you and the honors path definetly will pay off in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I haven't cheated, but trust me, Miss Arney takes cheating extremely seriously, on EVERYTHING, even the weekly extra-credits. It's not worth it. In case you haven't caught on from the other posts, DON'T SAVE MYTHOLOGY FOR THE END OF THE SUMMER. Also, read And Then There Were None last, so that you remember all the characters in September. Make flashcards for the main mythology gods/goddesses to you remember who is who.
Take advantage of the extra credit- it can save your grade!
DO NOT TEXT IN OR NEAR THIS CLASSROOM. EVER.
This is an awesome class, you learn a lot, just pay attention and you'll do fine.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh, and one more thing- CHECK THE WEBSITE EVERYDAY!!!!! I rarely checked the website, and so I was very unaware of many things going on in class- quizes, due dates, ect.

    ReplyDelete
  34. This class is really fun and Miss Arney is a great teacher so don't drop-out before you know what it's really like. Just try not to leave the reading until the last week of summer like I did... it's not fun. try to do the extra credit becuase it really helps your grade. Don't sparknote anything because it is impossible to do well on tests if you do.. oh and arneynotes are much better anyway. although the regular English class sounds easier, this class really prepares you for the SATs so its really good to take. oh and failing multiple quizzes/homework assignment/maybe the occaisonal test isn't actually that bad because extra credit really helps eliminate that bad grade.
    Good Luck and Have Fun!
p.s. be ready for when she screams when your not expecting it, it still scares us and we only have two days left

    ReplyDelete
  35. You guys will be fine just get through the first week. Try and do all the extra credi and plan your time wisley. And if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask Miss Arney's goal is to make you all better english students she always says Harvard NOT Therapy. GOOD LUCKK :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Miss Arney's class system of participation points and her "bank" is great to boost your average. I thought about dropping out too, but i am so happy i stayed with this class. I have learned so much in one year it is amazing. She is a very fair teacher and she never gives "too much". You will probably feel like the first week of school is over whelming, but at the end of the year you feel like you have no homework at all. Manage your time and stay focused during her class. She explains all the assignments and if you have a question, ask, because she will always try and help you. Also, always use the blog for questions on homework, on an essay and even when assignment are due. You also get extra credit by writing on blogs!! Use the time for assignments she gives you and always study for tests. One bad grade is not going to kill you. Trust me, I have gotten question marks on some of my homework assignments. Again, Miss Arney is a great teacher and don't be afraid of her. She doesn't bite.

    ReplyDelete
  37. some people will be fine just get through the first week. I personally got used to the work after a month because i didn't know how to manage my time and how to write a well done paragraph. (I still struggle but it gets better.) For those people who always lose points on essays or writing section, Miss Arney's class will help TREMENDOUSLY! Also, Try and do all the extra credit and plan your time wisely. And if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask Miss Arney. GOOD LUCKK :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Definitely stick with it! It will seem like a lot at first but it is worth it. I was considering dropping it because I thought I would do so bad, but honestly it's not that hard and if you take advantage of extra credit it helps SOO much! Miss. Arney is so helpful and she is always ready to help you if you are having troube. Take it, you won't regret it, trust me :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. This class is so worth taking it will actually prepare you for next year and college. You do so many meaningful things. Just make sure you do the homework and stay on top of reading and vocabulary and unlike me DO THE EXTRA CREDIT. There is so much that if you fail like everything else you can still get a good grade. Memorize the prepositions first quarter. It will be worth it all year. Just be on time to class and get your work done on time and you wont have a problem. You will get what you put into this class and putting a good effort in will help you learn a lot!

    ReplyDelete
  40. and participate in class. participation points do so much for your grade. they are really a gift take advantage of them!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Honestly, don't stress out about this class. It may seem like a big workload, but if you stick with it, you'll do fine. There's a lot of work, but if you can figure out how to balance it and use your time effectively, it's not bad at all and you'll be happy that you took Honors instead of regular. All you really have to do is figure out how to manage your time in a way that's best for you and then it's soo much easier to do well in this class.

P.S. Don't drop out of this class just because of the summer reading. Although it is a ridiculous amount of reading to do over the summer, it will prepare you for classes later on and will teach you not to procrastinate.. good luck! :)
